Exodus 28
The Priestly Garments
28ย โHave Aaron your brother brought to you from among the Israelites, along with his sons Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, so they may serve me as priests. 2ย Make sacred garments for your brother Aaron to give him dignity and honor. 3ย Tell all the skilled workers to whom I have given wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron, for his consecration, so he may serve me as priest. 4ย These are the garments they are to make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a woven tunic, a turban and a sash. They are to make these sacred garments for your brother Aaron and his sons, so they may serve me as priests. 5ย Have them use gold, and blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and fine linen.
The Ephod
6ย โMake the ephod of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linenโthe work of skilled hands. 7ย It is to have two shoulder pieces attached to two of its corners, so it can be fastened. 8ย Its skillfully woven waistband is to be like itโof one piece with the ephod and made with gold, and with blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and with finely twisted linen.
9ย โTake two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel 10ย in the order of their birthโsix names on one stone and the remaining six on the other. 11ย Engrave the names of the sons of Israel on the two stones the way a gem cutter engraves a seal. Then mount the stones in gold filigree settings 12ย and fasten them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as memorial stones for the sons of Israel. Aaron is to bear the names on his shoulders as a memorial before the Lord. 13ย Make gold filigree settings 14ย and two braided chains of pure gold, like a rope, and attach the chains to the settings.
The Breastpiece
15ย โFashion a breastpiece for making decisionsโthe work of skilled hands. Make it like the ephod: of gold, and of blue, purple and scarlet yarn, and of finely twisted linen. 16ย It is to be squareโa span[a] long and a span wideโand folded double. 17ย Then mount four rows of precious stones on it. The first row shall be carnelian, chrysolite and beryl; 18ย the second row shall be turquoise, lapis lazuli and emerald; 19ย the third row shall be jacinth, agate and amethyst; 20ย the fourth row shall be topaz, onyx and jasper.[b] Mount them in gold filigree settings. 21ย There are to be twelve stones, one for each of the names of the sons of Israel, each engraved like a seal with the name of one of the twelve tribes.
22ย โFor the breastpiece make braided chains of pure gold, like a rope. 23ย Make two gold rings for it and fasten them to two corners of the breastpiece. 24ย Fasten the two gold chains to the rings at the corners of the breastpiece, 25ย and the other ends of the chains to the two settings, attaching them to the shoulder pieces of the ephod at the front.26ย Make two gold rings and attach them to the other two corners of the breastpiece on the inside edge next to the ephod. 27ย Make two more gold rings and attach them to the bottom of the shoulder pieces on the front of the ephod, close to the seam just above the waistband of the ephod. 28ย The rings of the breastpiece are to be tied to the rings of the ephod with blue cord, connecting it to the waistband, so that the breastpiece will not swing out from the ephod.
29ย โWhenever Aaron enters the Holy Place, he will bear the names of the sons of Israel over his heart on the breastpiece of decision as a continuing memorial before the Lord.30ย Also put the Urim and the Thummim in the breastpiece, so they may be over Aaronโs heart whenever he enters the presence of the Lord. Thus Aaron will always bear the means of making decisions for the Israelites over his heart before the Lord.
Other Priestly Garments
31ย โMake the robe of the ephod entirely of blue cloth, 32ย with an opening for the head in its center. There shall be a woven edge like a collar[c] around this opening, so that it will not tear. 33ย Make pomegranates of blue, purple and scarlet yarn around the hem of the robe, with gold bells between them. 34ย The gold bells and the pomegranates are to alternate around the hem of the robe. 35ย Aaron must wear it when he ministers. The sound of the bells will be heard when he enters the Holy Place before the Lord and when he comes out, so that he will not die.
36ย โMake a plate of pure gold and engrave on it as on a seal: holy to the Lord. 37ย Fasten a blue cord to it to attach it to the turban; it is to be on the front of the turban. 38ย It will be on Aaronโs forehead, and he will bear the guilt involved in the sacred gifts the Israelites consecrate, whatever their gifts may be. It will be on Aaronโs forehead continually so that they will be acceptable to the Lord.
39ย โWeave the tunic of fine linen and make the turban of fine linen. The sash is to be the work of an embroiderer. 40ย Make tunics, sashes and caps for Aaronโs sons to give them dignity and honor. 41ย After you put these clothes on your brother Aaron and his sons, anoint and ordain them. Consecrate them so they may serve me as priests.
42ย โMake linen undergarments as a covering for the body, reaching from the waist to the thigh. 43ย Aaron and his sons must wear them whenever they enter the tent of meeting or approach the altar to minister in the Holy Place, so that they will not incur guilt and die.
โThis is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants.
Matthew 25:31-26:13
The Sheep and the Goats
31ย โWhen the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32ย All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33ย He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.
34ย โThen the King will say to those on his right, โCome, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.35ย For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36ย I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.โ
37ย โThen the righteous will answer him, โLord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38ย When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39ย When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?โ
40ย โThe King will reply, โTruly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.โ
41ย โThen he will say to those on his left, โDepart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42ย For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43ย I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.โ
44ย โThey also will answer, โLord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?โ
45ย โHe will reply, โTruly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.โ
46ย โThen they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.โ
Matthew 26:1-13
The Plot Against Jesus
26ย When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, 2ย โAs you know, the Passover is two days awayโand the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified.โ
3ย Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4ย and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. 5ย โBut not during the festival,โ they said, โor there may be a riot among the people.โ
Jesus Anointed at Bethany
6ย While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, 7ย a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.
8ย When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. โWhy this waste?โ they asked. 9ย โThis perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor.โ
10ย Aware of this, Jesus said to them, โWhy are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 11ย The poor you will always have with you,[a] but you will not always have me. 12ย When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial. 13ย Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her.โ
Psalm 31:9-18
9ย Be merciful to me, Lord, for I am in distress;
ย ย ย ย my eyes grow weak with sorrow,
ย ย ย ย my soul and body with grief.
10ย My life is consumed by anguish
ย ย ย ย and my years by groaning;
my strength fails because of my affliction,[a]
ย ย ย ย and my bones grow weak.
11ย Because of all my enemies,
ย ย ย ย I am the utter contempt of my neighbors
and an object of dread to my closest friendsโ
ย ย ย ย those who see me on the street flee from me.
12ย I am forgotten as though I were dead;
ย ย ย ย I have become like broken pottery.
13ย For I hear many whispering,
ย ย ย ย โTerror on every side!โ
They conspire against me
ย ย ย ย and plot to take my life.
14ย But I trust in you, Lord;
ย ย ย ย I say, โYou are my God.โ
15ย My times are in your hands;
ย ย ย ย deliver me from the hands of my enemies,
ย ย ย ย from those who pursue me.
16ย Let your face shine on your servant;
ย ย ย ย save me in your unfailing love.
17ย Let me not be put to shame, Lord,
ย ย ย ย for I have cried out to you;
but let the wicked be put to shame
ย ย ย ย and be silent in the realm of the dead.
18ย Let their lying lips be silenced,
ย ย ย ย for with pride and contempt
ย ย ย ย they speak arrogantly against the righteous.
Proverbs 8:12-13
12ย โI, wisdom, dwell together with prudence;
ย ย ย ย I possess knowledge and discretion.
13ย To fear the Lord is to hate evil;
ย ย ย ย I hate pride and arrogance,
ย ย ย ย evil behavior and perverse speech.
