Exodus 4:1-5:21
Signs for Moses
4ย Moses answered, โWhat if they do not believe me or listen to me and say, โThe Lord did not appear to youโ?โ
2ย Then the Lord said to him, โWhat is that in your hand?โ
โA staff,โ he replied.
3ย The Lord said, โThrow it on the ground.โ
Moses threw it on the ground and it became a snake, and he ran from it. 4ย Then the Lord said to him, โReach out your hand and take it by the tail.โ So Moses reached out and took hold of the snake and it turned back into a staff in his hand. 5ย โThis,โ said the Lord, โis so that they may believe that the Lord, the God of their fathersโthe God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacobโhas appeared to you.โ
6ย Then the Lord said, โPut your hand inside your cloak.โ So Moses put his hand into his cloak, and when he took it out, the skin was leprous[a]โit had become as white as snow.
7ย โNow put it back into your cloak,โ he said. So Moses put his hand back into his cloak, and when he took it out, it was restored, like the rest of his flesh.
8ย Then the Lord said, โIf they do not believe you or pay attention to the first sign, they may believe the second. 9ย But if they do not believe these two signs or listen to you, take some water from the Nile and pour it on the dry ground. The water you take from the river will become blood on the ground.โ
10ย Moses said to the Lord, โPardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.โ
11ย The Lord said to him, โWho gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12ย Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.โ
13ย But Moses said, โPardon your servant, Lord. Please send someone else.โ
14ย Then the Lordโs anger burned against Moses and he said, โWhat about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and he will be glad to see you. 15ย You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. 16ย He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouthand as if you were God to him. 17ย But take this staff in your hand so you can perform the signs with it.โ
Moses Returns to Egypt
18ย Then Moses went back to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, โLet me return to my own people in Egypt to see if any of them are still alive.โ
Jethro said, โGo, and I wish you well.โ
19ย Now the Lord had said to Moses in Midian, โGo back to Egypt, for all those who wanted to kill you are dead.โ 20ย So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey and started back to Egypt. And he took the staff of God in his hand.
21ย The Lord said to Moses, โWhen you return to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders I have given you the power to do. But I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go. 22ย Then say to Pharaoh, โThis is what the Lord says: Israel is my firstborn son, 23ย and I told you, โLet my son go, so he may worship me.โ But you refused to let him go; so I will kill your firstborn son.โโ
24ย At a lodging place on the way, the Lord met Moses[b] and was about to kill him. 25ย But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her sonโs foreskin and touched Mosesโ feet with it.[c] โSurely you are a bridegroom of blood to me,โ she said. 26ย So the Lord let him alone. (At that time she said โbridegroom of blood,โ referring to circumcision.)
27ย The Lord said to Aaron, โGo into the wilderness to meet Moses.โ So he met Moses at the mountain of God and kissed him.28ย Then Moses told Aaron everything the Lord had sent him to say, and also about all the signs he had commanded him to perform.
29ย Moses and Aaron brought together all the elders of the Israelites, 30ย and Aaron told them everything the Lord had said to Moses. He also performed the signs before the people, 31ย and they believed. And when they heard that the Lord was concernedabout them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.
Exodus 5
Bricks Without Straw
5ย Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, โThis is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: โLet my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.โโ
2ย Pharaoh said, โWho is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.โ
3ย Then they said, โThe God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword.โ
4ย But the king of Egypt said, โMoses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!โ5ย Then Pharaoh said, โLook, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working.โ
6ย That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and overseers in charge of the people: 7ย โYou are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw. 8ย But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; donโt reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, โLet us go and sacrifice to our God.โ 9ย Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.โ
10ย Then the slave drivers and the overseers went out and said to the people, โThis is what Pharaoh says: โI will not give you any more straw. 11ย Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.โโ 12ย So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. 13ย The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, โComplete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.โ 14ย And Pharaohโs slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding, โWhy havenโt you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?โ
15ย Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: โWhy have you treated your servants this way? 16ย Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, โMake bricks!โ Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.โ
17ย Pharaoh said, โLazy, thatโs what you areโlazy! That is why you keep saying, โLet us go and sacrifice to the Lord.โ 18ย Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks.โ
19ย The Israelite overseers realized they were in trouble when they were told, โYou are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.โ 20ย When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, 21ย and they said, โMay the Lord look on you and judge you! You have made us obnoxious to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.โ
Matthew 18:1-20
The Greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven
18ย At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, โWho, then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?โ
2ย He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. 3ย And he said: โTruly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4ย Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 5ย And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.
Causing to Stumble
6ย โIf anyone causes one of these little onesโthose who believe in meโto stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. 7ย Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come! 8ย If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. 9ย And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.
The Parable of the Wandering Sheep
10ย โSee that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven. [11]ย [a]
12ย โWhat do you think? If a man owns a hundred sheep, and one of them wanders away, will he not leave the ninety-nine on the hills and go to look for the one that wandered off? 13ย And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he is happier about that one sheep than about the ninety-nine that did not wander off. 14ย In the same way your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.
Dealing With Sin in the Church
15ย โIf your brother or sister[b] sins,[c] go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16ย But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that โevery matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.โ[d] 17ย If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.
18ย โTruly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be[e] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[f] loosed in heaven.
19ย โAgain, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. 20ย For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.โ
Psalm 22:19-31
19ย But you, Lord, do not be far from me.
ย ย ย ย You are my strength; come quickly to help me.
20ย Deliver me from the sword,
ย ย ย ย my precious life from the power of the dogs.
21ย Rescue me from the mouth of the lions;
ย ย ย ย save me from the horns of the wild oxen.
22ย I will declare your name to my people;
ย ย ย ย in the assembly I will praise you.
23ย You who fear the Lord, praise him!
ย ย ย ย All you descendants of Jacob, honor him!
ย ย ย ย Revere him, all you descendants of Israel!
24ย For he has not despised or scorned
ย ย ย ย the suffering of the afflicted one;
he has not hidden his face from him
ย ย ย ย but has listened to his cry for help.
25ย From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly;
ย ย ย ย before those who fear you[a] I will fulfill my vows.
26ย The poor will eat and be satisfied;
ย ย ย ย those who seek the Lord will praise himโ
ย ย ย ย may your hearts live forever!
27ย All the ends of the earth
ย ย ย ย will remember and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
ย ย ย ย will bow down before him,
28ย for dominion belongs to the Lord
ย ย ย ย and he rules over the nations.
29ย All the rich of the earth will feast and worship;
ย ย ย ย all who go down to the dust will kneel before himโ
ย ย ย ย those who cannot keep themselves alive.
30ย Posterity will serve him;
ย ย ย ย future generations will be told about the Lord.
31ย They will proclaim his righteousness,
ย ย ย ย declaring to a people yet unborn:
ย ย ย ย He has done it!
Proverbs 5:15-21
15ย Drink water from your own cistern,
ย ย ย ย running water from your own well.
16ย Should your springs overflow in the streets,
ย ย ย ย your streams of water in the public squares?
17ย Let them be yours alone,
ย ย ย ย never to be shared with strangers.
18ย May your fountain be blessed,
ย ย ย ย and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19ย A loving doe, a graceful deerโ
ย ย ย ย may her breasts satisfy you always,
ย ย ย ย may you ever be intoxicated with her love.
20ย Why, my son, be intoxicated with another manโs wife?
ย ย ย ย Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?
21ย For your ways are in full view of the Lord,
ย ย ย ย and he examines all your paths.
