Leviticus 11-12
Clean and Unclean Food
11Â The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 2Â âSay to the Israelites: âOf all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat: 3Â You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud.
4Â ââThere are some that only chew the cud or only have a divided hoof, but you must not eat them. The camel, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is ceremonially unclean for you. 5Â The hyrax, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. 6Â The rabbit, though it chews the cud, does not have a divided hoof; it is unclean for you. 7Â And the pig, though it has a divided hoof, does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. 8Â You must not eat their meat or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.
9Â ââOf all the creatures living in the water of the seas and the streams you may eat any that have fins and scales. 10Â But all creatures in the seas or streams that do not have fins and scalesâwhether among all the swarming things or among all the other living creatures in the waterâyou are to regard as unclean. 11Â And since you are to regard them as unclean, you must not eat their meat; you must regard their carcasses as unclean. 12Â Anything living in the water that does not have fins and scales is to be regarded as unclean by you.
13Â ââThese are the birds you are to regard as unclean and not eat because they are unclean: the eagle,[a] the vulture, the black vulture, 14Â the red kite, any kind of black kite, 15Â any kind of raven, 16Â the horned owl, the screech owl, the gull, any kind of hawk, 17Â the little owl, the cormorant, the great owl, 18Â the white owl, the desert owl, the osprey, 19Â the stork, any kind of heron, the hoopoe and the bat.
20Â ââAll flying insects that walk on all fours are to be regarded as unclean by you. 21Â There are, however, some flying insects that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground. 22Â Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper. 23Â But all other flying insects that have four legs you are to regard as unclean.
24Â ââYou will make yourselves unclean by these; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening. 25Â Whoever picks up one of their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.
26Â ââEvery animal that does not have a divided hoof or that does not chew the cud is unclean for you; whoever touches the carcass of any of them will be unclean. 27Â Of all the animals that walk on all fours, those that walk on their paws are unclean for you; whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean till evening. 28Â Anyone who picks up their carcasses must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. These animals are unclean for you.
29Â ââOf the animals that move along the ground, these are unclean for you: the weasel, the rat, any kind of great lizard, 30Â the gecko, the monitor lizard, the wall lizard, the skink and the chameleon. 31Â Of all those that move along the ground, these are unclean for you. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean till evening. 32Â When one of them dies and falls on something, that article, whatever its use, will be unclean, whether it is made of wood, cloth, hide or sackcloth. Put it in water; it will be unclean till evening, and then it will be clean. 33Â If one of them falls into a clay pot, everything in it will be unclean, and you must break the pot. 34Â Any food you are allowed to eat that has come into contact with water from any such pot is unclean, and any liquid that is drunk from such a pot is unclean. 35Â Anything that one of their carcasses falls on becomes unclean; an oven or cooking pot must be broken up. They are unclean, and you are to regard them as unclean. 36Â A spring, however, or a cistern for collecting water remains clean, but anyone who touches one of these carcasses is unclean. 37Â If a carcass falls on any seeds that are to be planted, they remain clean. 38Â But if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you.
39Â ââIf an animal that you are allowed to eat dies, anyone who touches its carcass will be unclean till evening. 40Â Anyone who eats some of its carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening. Anyone who picks up the carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.
41Â ââEvery creature that moves along the ground is to be regarded as unclean; it is not to be eaten. 42Â You are not to eat any creature that moves along the ground, whether it moves on its belly or walks on all fours or on many feet; it is unclean. 43Â Do not defile yourselves by any of these creatures. Do not make yourselves unclean by means of them or be made unclean by them. 44Â I am the Lord your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean by any creature that moves along the ground. 45Â I am the Lord, who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God;therefore be holy, because I am holy.
46Â ââThese are the regulations concerning animals, birds, every living thing that moves about in the water and every creature that moves along the ground.47Â You must distinguish between the unclean and the clean, between living creatures that may be eaten and those that may not be eaten.ââ
Leviticus 12
Purification After Childbirth
12Â The Lord said to Moses, 2Â âSay to the Israelites: âA woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period. 3Â On the eighth day the boy is to be circumcised. 4Â Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over. 5Â If she gives birth to a daughter, for two weeks the woman will be unclean, as during her period. Then she must wait sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding.
6Â ââWhen the days of her purification for a son or daughter are over, she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting a year-old lamb for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a dove for a sin offering.[b] 7Â He shall offer them before the Lord to make atonement for her, and then she will be ceremonially clean from her flow of blood.
ââThese are the regulations for the woman who gives birth to a boy or a girl. 8Â But if she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. In this way the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.ââ
Mark 5:21-43
Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman
21Â When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. 22Â Then one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23Â He pleaded earnestly with him, âMy little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.â 24Â So Jesus went with him.
A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25Â And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26Â She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27Â When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28Â because she thought, âIf I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.â 29Â Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
30Â At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, âWho touched my clothes?â
31Â âYou see the people crowding against you,â his disciples answered, âand yet you can ask, âWho touched me?â â
32Â But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33Â Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34Â He said to her, âDaughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.â
35Â While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. âYour daughter is dead,â they said. âWhy bother the teacher anymore?â
36Â Overhearing[a] what they said, Jesus told him, âDonât be afraid; just believe.â
37Â He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38Â When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39Â He went in and said to them, âWhy all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.â 40Â But they laughed at him.
After he put them all out, he took the childâs father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41Â He took her by the hand and said to her, âTalitha koum!â (which means âLittle girl, I say to you, get up!â). 42Â Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43Â He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
Psalm 38
A psalm of David. A petition.
1Â Lord, do not rebuke me in your anger
    or discipline me in your wrath.
2Â Your arrows have pierced me,
    and your hand has come down on me.
3Â Because of your wrath there is no health in my body;
    there is no soundness in my bones because of my sin.
4Â My guilt has overwhelmed me
    like a burden too heavy to bear.
5Â My wounds fester and are loathsome
    because of my sinful folly.
6Â I am bowed down and brought very low;
    all day long I go about mourning.
7Â My back is filled with searing pain;
    there is no health in my body.
8Â I am feeble and utterly crushed;
    I groan in anguish of heart.
9Â All my longings lie open before you, Lord;
    my sighing is not hidden from you.
10Â My heart pounds, my strength fails me;
    even the light has gone from my eyes.
11Â My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds;
    my neighbors stay far away.
12Â Those who want to kill me set their traps,
    those who would harm me talk of my ruin;
    all day long they scheme and lie.
13Â I am like the deaf, who cannot hear,
    like the mute, who cannot speak;
14Â I have become like one who does not hear,
    whose mouth can offer no reply.
15Â Lord, I wait for you;
    you will answer, Lord my God.
16Â For I said, âDo not let them gloat
    or exalt themselves over me when my feet slip.â
17Â For I am about to fall,
    and my pain is ever with me.
18Â I confess my iniquity;
    I am troubled by my sin.
19Â Many have become my enemies without cause[b];
    those who hate me without reason are numerous.
20Â Those who repay my good with evil
    lodge accusations against me,
    though I seek only to do what is good.
21Â Lord, do not forsake me;
    do not be far from me, my God.
22Â Come quickly to help me,
    my Lord and my Savior.
Proverbs 10:8-9
8Â The wise in heart accept commands,
    but a chattering fool comes to ruin.
9Â Whoever walks in integrity walks securely,
    but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.
