Exodus 12:14-13:16
14Â âThis is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lordâa lasting ordinance. 15Â For seven days you are to eat bread made without yeast. On the first day remove the yeast from your houses, for whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day through the seventh must be cut off from Israel. 16Â On the first day hold a sacred assembly, and another one on the seventh day. Do no work at all on these days, except to prepare food for everyone to eat; that is all you may do.
17Â âCelebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread, because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt.Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come. 18Â In the first month you are to eat bread made without yeast, from the evening of the fourteenth day until the evening of the twenty-first day. 19Â For seven days no yeast is to be found in your houses. And anyone, whether foreigner or native-born, who eats anything with yeast in it must be cut off from the community of Israel. 20Â Eat nothing made with yeast. Wherever you live, you must eat unleavened bread.â
21Â Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, âGo at once and select the animals for your families and slaughter the Passover lamb. 22Â Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the doorframe. None of you shall go out of the door of your house until morning. 23Â When the Lord goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the doorframe and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down.
24Â âObey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants. 25Â When you enter the land that the Lord will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. 26Â And when your children ask you, âWhat does this ceremony mean to you?â 27Â then tell them, âIt is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.ââ Then the people bowed down and worshiped. 28Â The Israelites did just what the Lordcommanded Moses and Aaron.
29Â At midnight the Lord struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well. 30Â Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing in Egypt, for there was not a house without someone dead.
The Exodus
31Â During the night Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, âUp! Leave my people, you and the Israelites! Go, worship the Lord as you have requested. 32Â Take your flocks and herds, as you have said, and go. And also bless me.â
33Â The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country. âFor otherwise,â they said, âwe will all die!â 34Â So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, and carried it on their shoulders in kneading troughs wrapped in clothing. 35Â The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing. 36Â The Lord had made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians.
37Â The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Sukkoth. There were about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children. 38Â Many other people went up with them, and also large droves of livestock, both flocks and herds. 39Â With the dough the Israelites had brought from Egypt, they baked loaves of unleavened bread. The dough was without yeast because they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves.
40Â Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt[a] was 430 years. 41Â At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the Lordâs divisions left Egypt. 42Â Because the Lord kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt, on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honor the Lord for the generations to come.
Passover Restrictions
43Â The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, âThese are the regulations for the Passover meal:
âNo foreigner may eat it. 44Â Any slave you have bought may eat it after you have circumcised him, 45Â but a temporary resident or a hired worker may not eat it.
46Â âIt must be eaten inside the house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones. 47Â The whole community of Israel must celebrate it.
48Â âA foreigner residing among you who wants to celebrate the Lordâs Passover must have all the males in his household circumcised; then he may take part like one born in the land. No uncircumcised male may eat it. 49Â The same law applies both to the native-born and to the foreigner residing among you.â
50Â All the Israelites did just what the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron. 51Â And on that very day the Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt by their divisions.
Exodus 13:16
Consecration of the Firstborn
13Â The Lord said to Moses, 2Â âConsecrate to me every firstborn male. The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether human or animal.â
3Â Then Moses said to the people, âCommemorate this day, the day you came out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery, because the Lord brought you out of it with a mighty hand. Eat nothing containing yeast. 4Â Today, in the month of Aviv, you are leaving. 5Â When the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Hivites and Jebusitesâthe land he swore to your ancestors to give you, a land flowing with milk and honeyâyou are to observe this ceremony in this month: 6Â For seven days eat bread made without yeast and on the seventh day hold a festival to the Lord. 7Â Eat unleavened bread during those seven days; nothing with yeast in it is to be seen among you, nor shall any yeast be seen anywhere within your borders. 8Â On that day tell your son, âI do this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.â 9Â This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips. For the Lord brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand. 10Â You must keep this ordinance at the appointed time year after year.
11Â âAfter the Lord brings you into the land of the Canaanites and gives it to you, as he promised on oath to you and your ancestors,12Â you are to give over to the Lord the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the Lord.13Â Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem every firstborn among your sons.
14Â âIn days to come, when your son asks you, âWhat does this mean?â say to him, âWith a mighty hand the Lord brought us out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. 15Â When Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, the Lord killed the firstborn of both people and animals in Egypt. This is why I sacrifice to the Lord the first male offspring of every womb and redeem each of my firstborn sons.â16Â And it will be like a sign on your hand and a symbol on your forehead that the Lord brought us out of Egypt with his mighty hand.â
Matthew 20:29-21:22
Two Blind Men Receive Sight
29Â As Jesus and his disciples were leaving Jericho, a large crowd followed him. 30Â Two blind men were sitting by the roadside, and when they heard that Jesus was going by, they shouted, âLord, Son of David, have mercy on us!â
31Â The crowd rebuked them and told them to be quiet, but they shouted all the louder, âLord, Son of David, have mercy on us!â
32Â Jesus stopped and called them. âWhat do you want me to do for you?â he asked.
33Â âLord,â they answered, âwe want our sight.â
34Â Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.
Matthew 21:22
Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King
21Â As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2Â saying to them, âGo to the village ahead of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3Â If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them, and he will send them right away.â
4Â This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet:
5Â âSay to Daughter Zion,
âSee, your king comes to you,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.ââ[a]
6Â The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7Â They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on. 8Â A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9Â The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,
âHosanna[b] to the Son of David!â
âBlessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!â[c]
âHosanna[d] in the highest heaven!â
10Â When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, âWho is this?â
11Â The crowds answered, âThis is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.â
Jesus at the Temple
12Â Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13Â âIt is written,â he said to them, ââMy house will be called a house of prayer,â[e]but you are making it âa den of robbers.â[f]â
14Â The blind and the lame came to him at the temple, and he healed them. 15Â But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did and the children shouting in the temple courts, âHosanna to the Son of David,â they were indignant.
16Â âDo you hear what these children are saying?â they asked him.
âYes,â replied Jesus, âhave you never read,
ââFrom the lips of children and infants
you, Lord, have called forth your praiseâ[g]?â
17Â And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night.
Jesus Curses a Fig Tree
18Â Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry. 19Â Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, âMay you never bear fruit again!â Immediately the tree withered.
20Â When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. âHow did the fig tree wither so quickly?â they asked.
21Â Jesus replied, âTruly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, âGo, throw yourself into the sea,â and it will be done. 22Â If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask forin prayer.â
Psalm 25:16-22
16Â Turn to me and be gracious to me,
for I am lonely and afflicted.
17Â Relieve the troubles of my heart
and free me from my anguish.
18Â Look on my affliction and my distress
and take away all my sins.
19Â See how numerous are my enemies
and how fiercely they hate me!
20Â Guard my life and rescue me;
do not let me be put to shame,
for I take refuge in you.
21Â May integrity and uprightness protect me,
because my hope, Lord,[a] is in you.
22Â Deliver Israel, O God,
    from all their troubles!
Proverbs 6:12-15
12Â A troublemaker and a villain,
who goes about with a corrupt mouth,
13Â Â Â Â Â who winks maliciously with his eye,
    signals with his feet
    and motions with his fingers,
14Â Â Â Â Â who plots evil with deceit in his heartâ
    he always stirs up conflict.
15Â Therefore disaster will overtake him in an instant;
he will suddenly be destroyedâwithout remedy.
