Numbers 21:1-22:20
Arad Destroyed
21ย When the Canaanite king of Arad, who lived in the Negev, heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim, he attacked the Israelites and captured some of them. 2ย Then Israel made this vow to the Lord: โIf you will deliver these people into our hands, we will totally destroy[a] their cities.โ 3ย The Lord listened to Israelโs plea and gave the Canaanites over to them. They completely destroyed them and their towns; so the place was named Hormah.[b]
The Bronze Snake
4ย They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea,[c] to go around Edom. But the people grew impatient on the way; 5ย they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, โWhy have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!โ
6ย Then the Lord sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died. 7ย The people came to Moses and said, โWe sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.โ So Moses prayed for the people.
8ย The Lord said to Moses, โMake a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.โ 9ย So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.
The Journey to Moab
10ย The Israelites moved on and camped at Oboth. 11ย Then they set out from Oboth and camped in Iye Abarim, in the wilderness that faces Moab toward the sunrise. 12ย From there they moved on and camped in the Zered Valley. 13ย They set out from there and camped alongside the Arnon, which is in the wilderness extending into Amorite territory. The Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.14ย That is why the Book of the Wars of the Lord says:
โ. . . Zahab[d] in Suphah and the ravines,
ย ย ย ย the Arnon 15ย and[e] the slopes of the ravines
that lead to the settlement of Ar
ย ย ย ย and lie along the border of Moab.โ
16ย From there they continued on to Beer, the well where the Lord said to Moses, โGather the people together and I will give them water.โ
17ย Then Israel sang this song:
โSpring up, O well!
ย ย ย ย Sing about it,
18ย about the well that the princes dug,
ย ย ย ย that the nobles of the people sankโ
ย ย ย ย the nobles with scepters and staffs.โ
Then they went from the wilderness to Mattanah, 19ย from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth,20ย and from Bamoth to the valley in Moab where the top of Pisgah overlooks the wasteland.
Defeat of Sihon and Og
21ย Israel sent messengers to say to Sihon king of the Amorites:
22ย โLet us pass through your country. We will not turn aside into any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the Kingโs Highway until we have passed through your territory.โ
23ย But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. He mustered his entire army and marched out into the wilderness against Israel. When he reached Jahaz, he fought with Israel. 24ย Israel, however, put him to the sword and took over his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, but only as far as the Ammonites,because their border was fortified. 25ย Israel captured all the cities of the Amorites and occupied them,including Heshbon and all its surrounding settlements. 26ย Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab and had taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon.
27ย That is why the poets say:
โCome to Heshbon and let it be rebuilt;
ย ย ย ย let Sihonโs city be restored.
28ย โFire went out from Heshbon,
ย ย ย ย a blaze from the city of Sihon.
It consumed Ar of Moab,
ย ย ย ย the citizens of Arnonโs heights.
29ย Woe to you, Moab!
ย ย ย ย You are destroyed, people of Chemosh!
He has given up his sons as fugitives
ย ย ย ย and his daughters as captives
ย ย ย ย to Sihon king of the Amorites.
30ย โBut we have overthrown them;
ย ย ย ย Heshbonโs dominion has been destroyed all the way to Dibon.
We have demolished them as far as Nophah,
ย ย ย ย which extends to Medeba.โ
31ย So Israel settled in the land of the Amorites.
32ย After Moses had sent spies to Jazer, the Israelites captured its surrounding settlements and drove out the Amorites who were there. 33ย Then they turned and went up along the road toward Bashan, and Og king of Bashan and his whole army marched out to meet them in battle at Edrei.
34ย The Lord said to Moses, โDo not be afraid of him, for I have delivered him into your hands, along with his whole army and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon.โ
35ย So they struck him down, together with his sons and his whole army, leaving them no survivors. And they took possession of his land.
Numbers 22:1-20
Balak Summons Balaam
22ย Then the Israelites traveled to the plains of Moab and camped along the Jordan across from Jericho.
2ย Now Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites, 3ย and Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread because of the Israelites.
4ย The Moabites said to the elders of Midian, โThis horde is going to lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.โ
So Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time, 5ย sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor, who was at Pethor, near the Euphrates River, in his native land. Balak said:
โA people has come out of Egypt; they cover the face of the land and have settled next to me. 6ย Now come and put a curse on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land. For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.โ
7ย The elders of Moab and Midian left, taking with them the fee for divination. When they came to Balaam, they told him what Balak had said.
8ย โSpend the night here,โ Balaam said to them, โand I will report back to you with the answer the Lordgives me.โ So the Moabite officials stayed with him.
9ย God came to Balaam and asked, โWho are these men with you?โ
10ย Balaam said to God, โBalak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me this message: 11ย โA people that has come out of Egypt covers the face of the land. Now come and put a curse on them for me. Perhaps then I will be able to fight them and drive them away.โโ
12ย But God said to Balaam, โDo not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed.โ
13ย The next morning Balaam got up and said to Balakโs officials, โGo back to your own country, for the Lord has refused to let me go with you.โ
14ย So the Moabite officials returned to Balak and said, โBalaam refused to come with us.โ
15ย Then Balak sent other officials, more numerous and more distinguished than the first. 16ย They came to Balaam and said:
โThis is what Balak son of Zippor says: Do not let anything keep you from coming to me, 17ย because I will reward you handsomely and do whatever you say. Come and put a curse on these people for me.โ
18ย But Balaam answered them, โEven if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything great or small to go beyond the command of the Lord my God. 19ย Now spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me.โ
20ย That night God came to Balaam and said, โSince these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you.โ
Luke 1:26-56
The Birth of Jesus Foretold
26ย In the sixth month of Elizabethโs pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee,27ย to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virginโs name was Mary. 28ย The angel went to her and said, โGreetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.โ
29ย Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30ย But the angel said to her, โDo not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31ย You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32ย He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33ย and he will reign over Jacobโs descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.โ
34ย โHow will this be,โ Mary asked the angel, โsince I am a virgin?โ
35ย The angel answered, โThe Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called[a] the Son of God. 36ย Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37ย For no word from God will ever fail.โ
38ย โI am the Lordโs servant,โ Mary answered. โMay your word to me be fulfilled.โ Then the angel left her.
Mary Visits Elizabeth
39ย At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, 40ย where she entered Zechariahโs home and greeted Elizabeth. 41ย When Elizabeth heard Maryโs greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42ย In a loud voice she exclaimed: โBlessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear! 43ย But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44ย As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45ย Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!โ
Maryโs Song
46ย And Mary said:
โMy soul glorifies the Lord
47ย ย ย ย ย and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48ย for he has been mindful
ย ย ย ย of the humble state of his servant.
From now on all generations will call me blessed,
49ย ย ย ย ย for the Mighty One has done great things for meโ
ย ย ย ย holy is his name.
50ย His mercy extends to those who fear him,
ย ย ย ย from generation to generation.
51ย He has performed mighty deeds with his arm;
ย ย ย ย he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts.
52ย He has brought down rulers from their thrones
ย ย ย ย but has lifted up the humble.
53ย He has filled the hungry with good things
ย ย ย ย but has sent the rich away empty.
54ย He has helped his servant Israel,
ย ย ย ย remembering to be merciful
55ย to Abraham and his descendants forever,
ย ย ย ย just as he promised our ancestors.โ
56ย Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.
Psalm 57
For the director of music. To the tune of โDo Not Destroy.โ Of David. A miktam.[b] When he had fled from Saul into the cave.
1ย Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me,
ย ย ย ย for in you I take refuge.
I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings
ย ย ย ย until the disaster has passed.
2ย I cry out to God Most High,
ย ย ย ย to God, who vindicates me.
3ย He sends from heaven and saves me,
ย ย ย ย rebuking those who hotly pursue meโ[c]
ย ย ย ย God sends forth his love and his faithfulness.
4ย I am in the midst of lions;
ย ย ย ย I am forced to dwell among ravenous beastsโ
men whose teeth are spears and arrows,
ย ย ย ย whose tongues are sharp swords.
5ย Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
ย ย ย ย let your glory be over all the earth.
6ย They spread a net for my feetโ
ย ย ย ย I was bowed down in distress.
They dug a pit in my pathโ
ย ย ย ย but they have fallen into it themselves.
7ย My heart, O God, is steadfast,
ย ย ย ย my heart is steadfast;
ย ย ย ย I will sing and make music.
8ย Awake, my soul!
ย ย ย ย Awake, harp and lyre!
ย ย ย ย I will awaken the dawn.
9ย I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
ย ย ย ย I will sing of you among the peoples.
10ย For great is your love, reaching to the heavens;
ย ย ย ย your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
11ย Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
ย ย ย ย let your glory be over all the earth.
Proverbs 11:9-11
9ย With their mouths the godless destroy their neighbors,
ย ย ย ย but through knowledge the righteous escape.
10ย When the righteous prosper, the city rejoices;
ย ย ย ย when the wicked perish, there are shouts of joy.
11ย Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted,
ย ย ย ย but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed.
