Numbers 2-3
The Arrangement of the Tribal Camps
2ย The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 2ย โThe Israelites are to camp around the tent of meeting some distance from it, each of them under their standard and holding the banners of their family.โ
3ย On the east, toward the sunrise, the divisions of the camp of Judah are to encamp under their standard. The leader of the people of Judah is Nahshon son of Amminadab. 4ย His division numbers 74,600.
5ย The tribe of Issachar will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Issachar is Nethanel son of Zuar. 6ย His division numbers 54,400.
7ย The tribe of Zebulun will be next. The leader of the people of Zebulun is Eliab son of Helon. 8ย His division numbers 57,400.
9ย All the men assigned to the camp of Judah, according to their divisions, number 186,400. They will set out first.
10ย On the south will be the divisions of the camp of Reuben under their standard. The leader of the people of Reuben is Elizur son of Shedeur. 11ย His division numbers 46,500.
12ย The tribe of Simeon will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Simeon is Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. 13ย His division numbers 59,300.
14ย The tribe of Gad will be next. The leader of the people of Gad is Eliasaph son of Deuel.[a] 15ย His division numbers 45,650.
16ย All the men assigned to the camp of Reuben, according to their divisions, number 151,450. They will set out second.
17ย Then the tent of meeting and the camp of the Levites will set out in the middle of the camps. They will set out in the same order as they encamp, each in their own place under their standard.
18ย On the west will be the divisions of the camp of Ephraim under their standard. The leader of the people of Ephraim is Elishama son of Ammihud. 19ย His division numbers 40,500.
20ย The tribe of Manasseh will be next to them. The leader of the people of Manasseh is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. 21ย His division numbers 32,200.
22ย The tribe of Benjamin will be next. The leader of the people of Benjamin is Abidan son of Gideoni. 23ย His division numbers 35,400.
24ย All the men assigned to the camp of Ephraim, according to their divisions, number 108,100. They will set out third.
25ย On the north will be the divisions of the camp of Dan under their standard. The leader of the people of Dan is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. 26ย His division numbers 62,700.
27ย The tribe of Asher will camp next to them. The leader of the people of Asher is Pagiel son of Okran. 28ย His division numbers 41,500.
29ย The tribe of Naphtali will be next. The leader of the people of Naphtali is Ahira son of Enan. 30ย His division numbers 53,400.
31ย All the men assigned to the camp of Dan number 157,600. They will set out last, under their standards.
32ย These are the Israelites, counted according to their families. All the men in the camps, by their divisions, number 603,550. 33ย The Levites, however, were not counted along with the other Israelites, as the Lord commanded Moses.
34ย So the Israelites did everything the Lord commanded Moses; that is the way they encamped under their standards, and that is the way they set out, each of them with their clan and family.
Numbers 3
The Levites
3ย This is the account of the family of Aaron and Moses at the time the Lord spoke to Moses at Mount Sinai.
2ย The names of the sons of Aaron were Nadab the firstborn and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 3ย Those were the names of Aaronโs sons, the anointed priests, who were ordained to serve as priests. 4ย Nadab and Abihu, however, died before the Lord when they made an offering with unauthorized fire before him in the Desert of Sinai. They had no sons, so Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests during the lifetime of their father Aaron.
5ย The Lord said to Moses, 6ย โBring the tribe of Levi and present them to Aaron the priest to assist him. 7ย They are to perform duties for him and for the whole community at the tent of meeting by doing the work of the tabernacle. 8ย They are to take care of all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, fulfilling the obligations of the Israelites by doing the work of the tabernacle. 9ย Give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to him.[b] 10ย Appoint Aaron and his sons to serve as priests; anyone else who approaches the sanctuary is to be put to death.โ
11ย The Lord also said to Moses, 12ย โI have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of the first male offspring of every Israelite woman. The Levites are mine, 13ย for all the firstborn are mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set apart for myself every firstborn in Israel, whether human or animal. They are to be mine. I am the Lord.โ
14ย The Lord said to Moses in the Desert of Sinai, 15ย โCount the Levites by their families and clans. Count every male a month old or more.โ 16ย So Moses counted them, as he was commanded by the word of the Lord.
17ย These were the names of the sons of Levi:
Gershon, Kohath and Merari.
18ย These were the names of the Gershonite clans:
Libni and Shimei.
19ย The Kohathite clans:
Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel.
20ย The Merarite clans:
Mahli and Mushi.
These were the Levite clans, according to their families.
21ย To Gershon belonged the clans of the Libnites and Shimeites; these were the Gershonite clans. 22ย The number of all the males a month old or more who were counted was 7,500.23ย The Gershonite clans were to camp on the west, behind the tabernacle. 24ย The leader of the families of the Gershonites was Eliasaph son of Lael. 25ย At the tent of meeting the Gershonites were responsible for the care of the tabernacle and tent, its coverings, the curtain at the entrance to the tent of meeting, 26ย the curtains of the courtyard, the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and altar, and the ropesโand everything related to their use.
27ย To Kohath belonged the clans of the Amramites, Izharites, Hebronites and Uzzielites; these were the Kohathite clans. 28ย The number of all the males a month old or more was 8,600.[c]The Kohathites were responsible for the care of the sanctuary. 29ย The Kohathite clans were to camp on the south side of the tabernacle. 30ย The leader of the families of the Kohathite clans was Elizaphan son of Uzziel. 31ย They were responsible for the care of the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the articles of the sanctuary used in ministering, the curtain, and everything related to their use. 32ย The chief leader of the Levites was Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest. He was appointed over those who were responsible for the care of the sanctuary.
33ย To Merari belonged the clans of the Mahlites and the Mushites; these were the Merarite clans. 34ย The number of all the males a month old or more who were counted was 6,200.35ย The leader of the families of the Merarite clans was Zuriel son of Abihail; they were to camp on the north side of the tabernacle. 36ย The Merarites were appointed to take care of the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, posts, bases, all its equipment, and everything related to their use, 37ย as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs and ropes.
38ย Moses and Aaron and his sons were to camp to the east of the tabernacle, toward the sunrise, in front of the tent of meeting. They were responsible for the care of the sanctuary on behalf of the Israelites. Anyone else who approached the sanctuary was to be put to death.
39ย The total number of Levites counted at the Lordโs command by Moses and Aaron according to their clans, including every male a month old or more, was 22,000.
40ย The Lord said to Moses, โCount all the firstborn Israelite males who are a month old or more and make a list of their names. 41ย Take the Levites for me in place of all the firstborn of the Israelites, and the livestock of the Levites in place of all the firstborn of the livestock of the Israelites. I am the Lord.โ
42ย So Moses counted all the firstborn of the Israelites, as the Lord commanded him. 43ย The total number of firstborn males a month old or more, listed by name, was 22,273.
44ย The Lord also said to Moses, 45ย โTake the Levites in place of all the firstborn of Israel, and the livestock of the Levites in place of their livestock. The Levites are to be mine. I am the Lord. 46ย To redeem the 273 firstborn Israelites who exceed the number of the Levites, 47ย collect five shekels[d] for each one, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs. 48ย Give the money for the redemption of the additional Israelites to Aaron and his sons.โ
49ย So Moses collected the redemption money from those who exceeded the number redeemed by the Levites. 50ย From the firstborn of the Israelites he collected silver weighing 1,365 shekels,[e] according to the sanctuary shekel. 51ย Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons, as he was commanded by the word of the Lord.
Mark 11:27-12:17
The Authority of Jesus Questioned
27ย They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28ย โBy what authority are you doing these things?โ they asked. โAnd who gave you authority to do this?โ
29ย Jesus replied, โI will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30ย Johnโs baptismโwas it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!โ
31ย They discussed it among themselves and said, โIf we say, โFrom heaven,โ he will ask, โThen why didnโt you believe him?โ 32ย But if we say, โOf human originโ โฆโ (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)
33ย So they answered Jesus, โWe donโt know.โ
Jesus said, โNeither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.โ
Mark 12:1-17
The Parable of the Tenants
12ย Jesus then began to speak to them in parables: โA man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. 2ย At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. 3ย But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4ย Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. 5ย He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.
6ย โHe had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all, saying, โThey will respect my son.โ
7ย โBut the tenants said to one another, โThis is the heir. Come, letโs kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.โ 8ย So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.
9ย โWhat then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10ย Havenโt you read this passage of Scripture:
โโThe stone the builders rejected
ย ย ย ย has become the cornerstone;
11ย the Lord has done this,
ย ย ย ย and it is marvelous in our eyesโ[a]?โ
12ย Then the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd; so they left him and went away.
Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar
13ย Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to Jesus to catch him in his words. 14ย They came to him and said, โTeacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You arenโt swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax[b] to Caesar or not?15ย Should we pay or shouldnโt we?โ
But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. โWhy are you trying to trap me?โ he asked. โBring me a denarius and let me look at it.โ 16ย They brought the coin, and he asked them, โWhose image is this? And whose inscription?โ
โCaesarโs,โ they replied.
17ย Then Jesus said to them, โGive back to Caesar what is Caesarโs and to God what is Godโs.โ
And they were amazed at him.
Psalm 47
For the director of music. Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.
1ย Clap your hands, all you nations;
ย ย ย ย shout to God with cries of joy.
2ย For the Lord Most High is awesome,
ย ย ย ย the great King over all the earth.
3ย He subdued nations under us,
ย ย ย ย peoples under our feet.
4ย He chose our inheritance for us,
ย ย ย ย the pride of Jacob, whom he loved.[b]
5ย God has ascended amid shouts of joy,
ย ย ย ย the Lord amid the sounding of trumpets.
6ย Sing praises to God, sing praises;
ย ย ย ย sing praises to our King, sing praises.
7ย For God is the King of all the earth;
ย ย ย ย sing to him a psalm of praise.
8ย God reigns over the nations;
ย ย ย ย God is seated on his holy throne.
9ย The nobles of the nations assemble
ย ย ย ย as the people of the God of Abraham,
for the kings[c] of the earth belong to God;
ย ย ย ย he is greatly exalted.
Proverbs 10:24-25
24ย What the wicked dread will overtake them;
ย ย ย ย what the righteous desire will be granted.
25ย When the storm has swept by, the wicked are gone,
ย ย ย ย but the righteous stand firm forever.
