Leviticus 13
Regulations About Defiling Skin Diseases
13ย The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 2ย โWhen anyone has a swelling or a rash or a shiny spot on their skin that may be a defiling skin disease,[a] they must be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons[b] who is a priest. 3ย The priest is to examine the sore on the skin, and if the hair in the sore has turned white and the sore appears to be more than skin deep, it is a defiling skin disease. When the priest examines that person, he shall pronounce them ceremonially unclean. 4ย If the shiny spot on the skin is white but does not appear to be more than skin deep and the hair in it has not turned white, the priest is to isolate the affected person for seven days. 5ย On the seventh day the priest is to examine them, and if he sees that the sore is unchanged and has not spread in the skin, he is to isolate them for another seven days. 6ย On the seventh day the priest is to examine them again, and if the sore has faded and has not spread in the skin, the priest shall pronounce them clean; it is only a rash. They must wash their clothes, and they will be clean. 7ย But if the rash does spread in their skin after they have shown themselves to the priest to be pronounced clean, they must appear before the priest again. 8ย The priest is to examine that person, and if the rash has spread in the skin, he shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease.
9ย โWhen anyone has a defiling skin disease, they must be brought to the priest. 10ย The priest is to examine them, and if there is a white swelling in the skin that has turned the hair white and if there is raw flesh in the swelling, 11ย it is a chronic skin disease and the priest shall pronounce them unclean. He is not to isolate them, because they are already unclean.
12ย โIf the disease breaks out all over their skin and, so far as the priest can see, it covers all the skin of the affected person from head to foot, 13ย the priest is to examine them, and if the disease has covered their whole body, he shall pronounce them clean. Since it has all turned white, they are clean. 14ย But whenever raw flesh appears on them, they will be unclean. 15ย When the priest sees the raw flesh, he shall pronounce them unclean. The raw flesh is unclean; they have a defiling disease. 16ย If the raw flesh changes and turns white, they must go to the priest. 17ย The priest is to examine them, and if the sores have turned white, the priest shall pronounce the affected person clean; then they will be clean.
18ย โWhen someone has a boil on their skin and it heals, 19ย and in the place where the boil was, a white swelling or reddish-white spot appears, they must present themselves to the priest. 20ย The priest is to examine it, and if it appears to be more than skin deep and the hair in it has turned white, the priest shall pronounce that person unclean. It is a defiling skin disease that has broken out where the boil was. 21ย But if, when the priest examines it, there is no white hair in it and it is not more than skin deep and has faded, then the priest is to isolate them for seven days. 22ย If it is spreading in the skin, the priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling disease. 23ย But if the spot is unchanged and has not spread, it is only a scar from the boil, and the priest shall pronounce them clean.
24ย โWhen someone has a burn on their skin and a reddish-white or white spot appears in the raw flesh of the burn, 25ย the priest is to examine the spot, and if the hair in it has turned white, and it appears to be more than skin deep, it is a defiling disease that has broken out in the burn. The priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease. 26ย But if the priest examines it and there is no white hair in the spot and if it is not more than skin deep and has faded, then the priest is to isolate them for seven days. 27ย On the seventh day the priest is to examine that person, and if it is spreading in the skin, the priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease. 28ย If, however, the spot is unchanged and has not spread in the skin but has faded, it is a swelling from the burn, and the priest shall pronounce them clean; it is only a scar from the burn.
29ย โIf a man or woman has a sore on their head or chin, 30ย the priest is to examine the sore, and if it appears to be more than skin deep and the hair in it is yellow and thin, the priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease on the head or chin. 31ย But if, when the priest examines the sore, it does not seem to be more than skin deep and there is no black hair in it, then the priest is to isolate the affected person for seven days. 32ย On the seventh day the priest is to examine the sore, and if it has not spread and there is no yellow hair in it and it does not appear to be more than skin deep, 33ย then the man or woman must shave themselves, except for the affected area, and the priest is to keep them isolated another seven days. 34ย On the seventh day the priest is to examine the sore, and if it has not spread in the skin and appears to be no more than skin deep, the priest shall pronounce them clean. They must wash their clothes, and they will be clean. 35ย But if the sore does spread in the skin after they are pronounced clean, 36ย the priest is to examine them, and if he finds that the sore has spread in the skin, he does not need to look for yellow hair; they are unclean. 37ย If, however, the sore is unchanged so far as the priest can see, and if black hair has grown in it, the affected person is healed. They are clean, and the priest shall pronounce them clean.
38ย โWhen a man or woman has white spots on the skin, 39ย the priest is to examine them, and if the spots are dull white, it is a harmless rash that has broken out on the skin; they are clean.
40ย โA man who has lost his hair and is bald is clean. 41ย If he has lost his hair from the front of his scalp and has a bald forehead, he is clean. 42ย But if he has a reddish-white sore on his bald head or forehead, it is a defiling disease breaking out on his head or forehead. 43ย The priest is to examine him, and if the swollen sore on his head or forehead is reddish-white like a defiling skin disease, 44ย the man is diseased and is unclean. The priest shall pronounce him unclean because of the sore on his head.
45ย โAnyone with such a defiling disease must wear torn clothes, let their hair be unkempt,[c] cover the lower part of their face and cry out, โUnclean! Unclean!โ 46ย As long as they have the disease they remain unclean. They must live alone; they must live outside the camp.
Regulations About Defiling Molds
47ย โAs for any fabric that is spoiled with a defiling moldโany woolen or linen clothing, 48ย any woven or knitted material of linen or wool, any leather or anything made of leatherโ 49ย if the affected area in the fabric, the leather, the woven or knitted material, or any leather article, is greenish or reddish, it is a defiling mold and must be shown to the priest. 50ย The priest is to examine the affected area and isolate the article for seven days. 51ย On the seventh day he is to examine it, and if the mold has spread in the fabric, the woven or knitted material, or the leather, whatever its use, it is a persistent defiling mold; the article is unclean. 52ย He must burn the fabric, the woven or knitted material of wool or linen, or any leather article that has been spoiled; because the defiling mold is persistent, the article must be burned.
53ย โBut if, when the priest examines it, the mold has not spread in the fabric, the woven or knitted material, or the leather article, 54ย he shall order that the spoiled article be washed. Then he is to isolate it for another seven days. 55ย After the article has been washed, the priest is to examine it again, and if the mold has not changed its appearance, even though it has not spread, it is unclean. Burn it, no matter which side of the fabric has been spoiled. 56ย If, when the priest examines it, the mold has faded after the article has been washed, he is to tear the spoiled part out of the fabric, the leather, or the woven or knitted material. 57ย But if it reappears in the fabric, in the woven or knitted material, or in the leather article, it is a spreading mold; whatever has the mold must be burned. 58ย Any fabric, woven or knitted material, or any leather article that has been washed and is rid of the mold, must be washed again. Then it will be clean.โ
59ย These are the regulations concerning defiling molds in woolen or linen clothing, woven or knitted material, or any leather article, for pronouncing them clean or unclean.
Mark 6:1-29
A Prophet Without Honor
6ย Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2ย When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed.
โWhere did this man get these things?โ they asked. โWhatโs this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing?3ย Isnโt this the carpenter? Isnโt this Maryโs son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon? Arenโt his sisters here with us?โ And they took offense at him.
4ย Jesus said to them, โA prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.โ 5ย He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6ย He was amazed at their lack of faith.
Jesus Sends Out the Twelve
Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 7ย Calling the Twelve to him, he began to send them out two by two and gave them authority over impure spirits.
8ย These were his instructions: โTake nothing for the journey except a staffโno bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9ย Wear sandals but not an extra shirt. 10ย Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town. 11ย And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.โ
12ย They went out and preached that people should repent. 13ย They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
John the Baptist Beheaded
14ย King Herod heard about this, for Jesusโ name had become well known. Some were saying,[b] โJohn the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.โ
15ย Others said, โHe is Elijah.โ
And still others claimed, โHe is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago.โ
16ย But when Herod heard this, he said, โJohn, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!โ
17ย For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philipโs wife, whom he had married. 18ย For John had been saying to Herod, โIt is not lawful for you to have your brotherโs wife.โ 19ย So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, 20ย because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled[c]; yet he liked to listen to him.
21ย Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.22ย When the daughter of[d] Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.
The king said to the girl, โAsk me for anything you want, and Iโll give it to you.โ 23ย And he promised her with an oath, โWhatever you ask I will give you, up to half my kingdom.โ
24ย She went out and said to her mother, โWhat shall I ask for?โ
โThe head of John the Baptist,โ she answered.
25ย At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: โI want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.โ
26ย The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27ย So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring Johnโs head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28ย and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother. 29ย On hearing of this, Johnโs disciples came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.
Psalm 39
Psalm 39[a]
For the director of music. For Jeduthun. A psalm of David.
1ย I said, โI will watch my ways
ย ย ย ย and keep my tongue from sin;
I will put a muzzle on my mouth
ย ย ย ย while in the presence of the wicked.โ
2ย So I remained utterly silent,
ย ย ย ย not even saying anything good.
But my anguish increased;
3ย ย ย ย ย my heart grew hot within me.
While I meditated, the fire burned;
ย ย ย ย then I spoke with my tongue:
4ย โShow me, Lord, my lifeโs end
ย ย ย ย and the number of my days;
ย ย ย ย let me know how fleeting my life is.
5ย You have made my days a mere handbreadth;
ย ย ย ย the span of my years is as nothing before you.
Everyone is but a breath,
ย ย ย ย even those who seem secure.[b]
6ย โSurely everyone goes around like a mere phantom;
ย ย ย ย in vain they rush about, heaping up wealth
ย ย ย ย without knowing whose it will finally be.
7ย โBut now, Lord, what do I look for?
ย ย ย ย My hope is in you.
8ย Save me from all my transgressions;
ย ย ย ย do not make me the scorn of fools.
9ย I was silent; I would not open my mouth,
ย ย ย ย for you are the one who has done this.
10ย Remove your scourge from me;
ย ย ย ย I am overcome by the blow of your hand.
11ย When you rebuke and discipline anyone for their sin,
ย ย ย ย you consume their wealth like a mothโ
ย ย ย ย surely everyone is but a breath.
12ย โHear my prayer, Lord,
ย ย ย ย listen to my cry for help;
ย ย ย ย do not be deaf to my weeping.
I dwell with you as a foreigner,
ย ย ย ย a stranger, as all my ancestors were.
13ย Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again
ย ย ย ย before I depart and am no more.โ
Proverbs 10:10
10ย Whoever winks maliciously causes grief,
ย ย ย ย and a chattering fool comes to ruin.
