Exodus 10:1-12:13
The Plague of Locusts
10ย Then the Lord said to Moses, โGo to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials so that I may perform these signs of mine among them 2ย that you may tell your children and grandchildren how I dealt harshly with the Egyptians and how I performed my signs among them, and that you may know that I am the Lord.โ
3ย So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him, โThis is what the Lord, the God of the Hebrews, says: โHow long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go, so that they may worship me. 4ย If you refuse to let them go, I will bring locusts into your country tomorrow. 5ย They will cover the face of the ground so that it cannot be seen. They will devour what little you have left after the hail, including every tree that is growing in your fields. 6ย They will fill your houses and those of all your officials and all the Egyptiansโsomething neither your parents nor your ancestors have ever seen from the day they settled in this land till now.โโ Then Moses turned and left Pharaoh.
7ย Pharaohโs officials said to him, โHow long will this man be a snare to us? Let the people go, so that they may worship the Lordtheir God. Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined?โ
8ย Then Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh. โGo, worship the Lord your God,โ he said. โBut tell me who will be going.โ
9ย Moses answered, โWe will go with our young and our old, with our sons and our daughters, and with our flocks and herds, because we are to celebrate a festival to the Lord.โ
10ย Pharaoh said, โThe Lord be with youโif I let you go, along with your women and children! Clearly you are bent on evil.[a] 11ย No! Have only the men go and worship the Lord, since thatโs what you have been asking for.โ Then Moses and Aaron were driven out of Pharaohโs presence.
12ย And the Lord said to Moses, โStretch out your hand over Egypt so that locusts swarm over the land and devour everything growing in the fields, everything left by the hail.โ
13ย So Moses stretched out his staff over Egypt, and the Lord made an east wind blow across the land all that day and all that night. By morning the wind had brought the locusts; 14ย they invaded all Egypt and settled down in every area of the country in great numbers. Never before had there been such a plague of locusts, nor will there ever be again. 15ย They covered all the ground until it was black. They devoured all that was left after the hailโeverything growing in the fields and the fruit on the trees. Nothing green remained on tree or plant in all the land of Egypt.
16ย Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron and said, โI have sinned against the Lord your God and against you. 17ย Now forgive my sin once more and pray to the Lord your God to take this deadly plague away from me.โ
18ย Moses then left Pharaoh and prayed to the Lord. 19ย And the Lord changed the wind to a very strong west wind, which caught up the locusts and carried them into the Red Sea.[b] Not a locust was left anywhere in Egypt. 20ย But the Lord hardened Pharaohโs heart, and he would not let the Israelites go.
The Plague of Darkness
21ย Then the Lord said to Moses, โStretch out your hand toward the sky so that darkness spreads over Egyptโdarkness that can be felt.โ 22ย So Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and total darkness covered all Egypt for three days. 23ย No one could see anyone else or move about for three days. Yet all the Israelites had light in the places where they lived.
24ย Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, โGo, worship the Lord. Even your women and children may go with you; only leave your flocks and herds behind.โ
25ย But Moses said, โYou must allow us to have sacrifices and burnt offerings to present to the Lord our God. 26ย Our livestock too must go with us; not a hoof is to be left behind. We have to use some of them in worshiping the Lord our God, and until we get there we will not know what we are to use to worship the Lord.โ
27ย But the Lord hardened Pharaohโs heart, and he was not willing to let them go. 28ย Pharaoh said to Moses, โGet out of my sight! Make sure you do not appear before me again! The day you see my face you will die.โ
29ย โJust as you say,โ Moses replied. โI will never appear before you again.โ
Exodus 11
The Plague on the Firstborn
11ย Now the Lord had said to Moses, โI will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you go from here, and when he does, he will drive you out completely. 2ย Tell the people that men and women alike are to ask their neighbors for articles of silver and gold.โ 3ย (The Lord made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and Moses himself was highly regarded in Egypt by Pharaohโs officials and by the people.)
4ย So Moses said, โThis is what the Lord says: โAbout midnight I will go throughout Egypt. 5ย Every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the firstborn son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, to the firstborn son of the female slave, who is at her hand mill, and all the firstborn of the cattle as well. 6ย There will be loud wailing throughout Egyptโworse than there has ever been or ever will be again. 7ย But among the Israelites not a dog will bark at any person or animal.โ Then you will know that the Lord makes a distinctionbetween Egypt and Israel. 8ย All these officials of yours will come to me, bowing down before me and saying, โGo, you and all the people who follow you!โ After that I will leave.โ Then Moses, hot with anger, left Pharaoh.
9ย The Lord had said to Moses, โPharaoh will refuse to listen to youโso that my wonders may be multiplied in Egypt.โ 10ย Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh, but the Lord hardened Pharaohโs heart, and he would not let the Israelites go out of his country.
Exodus 12:13
The Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread
12ย The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, 2ย โThis month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. 3ย Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb[c] for his family, one for each household. 4ย If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat. 5ย The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats.6ย Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. 7ย Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs. 8ย That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast.9ย Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fireโwith the head, legs and internal organs. 10ย Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it. 11ย This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lordโs Passover.
12ย โOn that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. 13ย The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.
Matthew 20:1-28
The Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard
20ย โFor the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. 2ย He agreed to pay them a denarius[a] for the day and sent them into his vineyard.
3ย โAbout nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing. 4ย He told them, โYou also go and work in my vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.โ 5ย So they went.
โHe went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing. 6ย About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around. He asked them, โWhy have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?โ
7ย โโBecause no one has hired us,โ they answered.
โHe said to them, โYou also go and work in my vineyard.โ
8ย โWhen evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, โCall the workers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.โ
9ย โThe workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius. 10ย So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more. But each one of them also received a denarius. 11ย When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner. 12ย โThese who were hired last worked only one hour,โ they said, โand you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and the heat of the day.โ
13ย โBut he answered one of them, โI am not being unfair to you, friend. Didnโt you agree to work for a denarius? 14ย Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you. 15ย Donโt I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?โ
16ย โSo the last will be first, and the first will be last.โ
Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time
17ย Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them, 18ย โWe are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death 19ย and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!โ
A Motherโs Request
20ย Then the mother of Zebedeeโs sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.
21ย โWhat is it you want?โ he asked.
She said, โGrant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.โ
22ย โYou donโt know what you are asking,โ Jesus said to them. โCan you drink the cup I am going to drink?โ
โWe can,โ they answered.
23ย Jesus said to them, โYou will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.โ
24ย When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers. 25ย Jesus called them together and said, โYou know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 26ย Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 27ย and whoever wants to be first must be your slaveโ 28ย just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.โ
Psalm 25:1-15
Psalm 25
Of David.
1ย In you, Lord my God,
ย ย ย ย I put my trust.
2ย I trust in you;
ย ย ย ย do not let me be put to shame,
ย ย ย ย nor let my enemies triumph over me.
3ย No one who hopes in you
ย ย ย ย will ever be put to shame,
but shame will come on those
ย ย ย ย who are treacherous without cause.
4ย Show me your ways, Lord,
ย ย ย ย teach me your paths.
5ย Guide me in your truth and teach me,
ย ย ย ย for you are God my Savior,
ย ย ย ย and my hope is in you all day long.
6ย Remember, Lord, your great mercy and love,
ย ย ย ย for they are from of old.
7ย Do not remember the sins of my youth
ย ย ย ย and my rebellious ways;
according to your love remember me,
ย ย ย ย for you, Lord, are good.
8ย Good and upright is the Lord;
ย ย ย ย therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.
9ย He guides the humble in what is right
ย ย ย ย and teaches them his way.
10ย All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful
ย ย ย ย toward those who keep the demands of his covenant.
11ย For the sake of your name, Lord,
ย ย ย ย forgive my iniquity, though it is great.
12ย Who, then, are those who fear the Lord?
ย ย ย ย He will instruct them in the ways they should choose.[b]
13ย They will spend their days in prosperity,
ย ย ย ย and their descendants will inherit the land.
14ย The Lord confides in those who fear him;
ย ย ย ย he makes his covenant known to them.
15ย My eyes are ever on the Lord,
ย ย ย ย for only he will release my feet from the snare.
Proverbs 6:6-11
6ย Go to the ant, you sluggard;
ย ย ย ย consider its ways and be wise!
7ย It has no commander,
ย ย ย ย no overseer or ruler,
8ย yet it stores its provisions in summer
ย ย ย ย and gathers its food at harvest.
9ย How long will you lie there, you sluggard?
ย ย ย ย When will you get up from your sleep?
10ย A little sleep, a little slumber,
ย ย ย ย a little folding of the hands to restโ
11ย and poverty will come on you like a thief
ย ย ย ย and scarcity like an armed man.
