Exodus 32-33
The Golden Calf
32ย When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, โCome, make us gods[a] who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we donโt know what has happened to him.โ
2ย Aaron answered them, โTake off the gold earrings that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.โ 3ย So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron. 4ย He took what they handed him and made it into an idol cast in the shape of a calf, fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, โThese are your gods,[b]Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.โ
5ย When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, โTomorrow there will be a festival to the Lord.โ 6ย So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings. Afterward they sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.
7ย Then the Lord said to Moses, โGo down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt. 8ย They have been quick to turn away from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. They have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and have said, โThese are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.โ
9ย โI have seen these people,โ the Lord said to Moses, โand they are a stiff-necked people. 10ย Now leave me alone so that my anger may burn against them and that I may destroythem. Then I will make you into a great nation.โ
11ย But Moses sought the favor of the Lord his God. โLord,โ he said, โwhy should your anger burn against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and a mighty hand? 12ย Why should the Egyptians say, โIt was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earthโ? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people. 13ย Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, to whom you swore by your own self: โI will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and I will give your descendants all this land I promised them, and it will be their inheritance forever.โโ 14ย Then the Lordrelented and did not bring on his people the disaster he had threatened.
15ย Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands. They were inscribed on both sides, front and back. 16ย The tablets were the work of God; the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.
17ย When Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, โThere is the sound of war in the camp.โ
18ย Moses replied:
โIt is not the sound of victory,
ย ย ย ย it is not the sound of defeat;
ย ย ย ย it is the sound of singing that I hear.โ
19ย When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. 20ย And he took the calf the people had made and burned it in the fire; then he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it.
21ย He said to Aaron, โWhat did these people do to you, that you led them into such great sin?โ
22ย โDo not be angry, my lord,โ Aaron answered. โYou know how prone these people are to evil. 23ย They said to me, โMake us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we donโt know what has happened to him.โ 24ย So I told them, โWhoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.โ Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!โ
25ย Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock to their enemies. 26ย So he stood at the entrance to the camp and said, โWhoever is for the Lord, come to me.โ And all the Levites rallied to him.
27ย Then he said to them, โThis is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: โEach man strap a sword to his side. Go back and forth through the camp from one end to the other, each killing his brother and friend and neighbor.โโ 28ย The Levites did as Moses commanded, and that day about three thousand of the people died. 29ย Then Moses said, โYou have been set apart to the Lord today, for you were against your own sons and brothers, and he has blessed you this day.โ
30ย The next day Moses said to the people, โYou have committed a great sin. But now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.โ
31ย So Moses went back to the Lord and said, โOh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold. 32ย But now, please forgive their sinโbut if not, then blot me out of the book you have written.โ
33ย The Lord replied to Moses, โWhoever has sinned against me I will blot out of my book. 34ย Now go, lead the people to the place I spoke of, and my angel will go before you. However, when the time comes for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin.โ
35ย And the Lord struck the people with a plague because of what they did with the calf Aaron had made.
Exodus 33
33ย Then the Lord said to Moses, โLeave this place, you and the people you brought up out of Egypt, and go up to the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, saying, โI will give it to your descendants.โ 2ย I will send an angel before you and drive out the Canaanites, Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 3ย Go up to the land flowing with milk and honey. But I will not go with you, because you are a stiff-necked people and I might destroy you on the way.โ
4ย When the people heard these distressing words, they began to mourn and no one put on any ornaments. 5ย For the Lord had said to Moses, โTell the Israelites, โYou are a stiff-necked people. If I were to go with you even for a moment, I might destroy you. Now take off your ornaments and I will decide what to do with you.โโ 6ย So the Israelites stripped off their ornaments at Mount Horeb.
The Tent of Meeting
7ย Now Moses used to take a tent and pitch it outside the camp some distance away, calling it the โtent of meeting.โ Anyone inquiring of the Lord would go to the tent of meeting outside the camp. 8ย And whenever Moses went out to the tent, all the people rose and stood at the entrances to their tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent. 9ย As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the Lord spoke with Moses. 10ย Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshiped, each at the entrance to their tent. 11ย The Lord would speak to Moses face to face, as one speaks to a friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent.
Moses and the Glory of the Lord
12ย Moses said to the Lord, โYou have been telling me, โLead these people,โ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You have said, โI know you by name and you have found favor with me.โ 13ย If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you. Remember that this nation is your people.โ
14ย The Lord replied, โMy Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.โ
15ย Then Moses said to him, โIf your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. 16ย How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?โ
17ย And the Lord said to Moses, โI will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.โ
18ย Then Moses said, โNow show me your glory.โ
19ย And the Lord said, โI will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. 20ย But,โ he said, โyou cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.โ
21ย Then the Lord said, โThere is a place near me where you may stand on a rock. 22ย When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23ย Then I will remove my hand and you will see my back; but my face must not be seen.โ
Matthew 26:69-27:14
Peter Disowns Jesus
69ย Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. โYou also were with Jesus of Galilee,โ she said.
70ย But he denied it before them all. โI donโt know what youโre talking about,โ he said.
71ย Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, โThis fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth.โ
72ย He denied it again, with an oath: โI donโt know the man!โ
73ย After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, โSurely you are one of them; your accent gives you away.โ
74ย Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, โI donโt know the man!โ
Immediately a rooster crowed. 75ย Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: โBefore the rooster crows, you will disown me three times.โ And he went outside and wept bitterly.
Matthew 27:1-14
Judas Hangs Himself
27ย Early in the morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people made their plans how to have Jesus executed. 2ย So they bound him, led him away and handed him overto Pilate the governor.
3ย When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 4ย โI have sinned,โ he said, โfor I have betrayed innocent blood.โ
โWhat is that to us?โ they replied. โThatโs your responsibility.โ
5ย So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.
6ย The chief priests picked up the coins and said, โIt is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money.โ 7ย So they decided to use the money to buy the potterโs field as a burial place for foreigners. 8ย That is why it has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9ย Then what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: โThey took the thirty pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, 10ย and they used them to buy the potterโs field, as the Lord commanded me.โ[a]
Jesus Before Pilate
11ย Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, โAre you the king of the Jews?โ
โYou have said so,โ Jesus replied.
12ย When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. 13ย Then Pilate asked him, โDonโt you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?โ 14ย But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single chargeโto the great amazement of the governor.
Psalm 33:1-11
Psalm 33
1ย Sing joyfully to the Lord, you righteous;
ย ย ย ย it is fitting for the upright to praise him.
2ย Praise the Lord with the harp;
ย ย ย ย make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.
3ย Sing to him a new song;
ย ย ย ย play skillfully, and shout for joy.
4ย For the word of the Lord is right and true;
ย ย ย ย he is faithful in all he does.
5ย The Lord loves righteousness and justice;
ย ย ย ย the earth is full of his unfailing love.
6ย By the word of the Lord the heavens were made,
ย ย ย ย their starry host by the breath of his mouth.
7ย He gathers the waters of the sea into jars[a];
ย ย ย ย he puts the deep into storehouses.
8ย Let all the earth fear the Lord;
ย ย ย ย let all the people of the world revere him.
9ย For he spoke, and it came to be;
ย ย ย ย he commanded, and it stood firm.
10ย The Lord foils the plans of the nations;
ย ย ย ย he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
11ย But the plans of the Lord stand firm forever,
ย ย ย ย the purposes of his heart through all generations.
Proverbs 8:33-36
33ย Listen to my instruction and be wise;
ย ย ย ย do not disregard it.
34ย Blessed are those who listen to me,
ย ย ย ย watching daily at my doors,
ย ย ย ย waiting at my doorway.
35ย For those who find me find life
ย ย ย ย and receive favor from the Lord.
36ย But those who fail to find me harm themselves;
ย ย ย ย all who hate me love death.โ
