Exodus 19:16-21:21
16ย On the morning of the third day there was thunder and lightning, with a thick cloud over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. Everyone in the camp trembled. 17ย Then Moses led the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18ย Mount Sinai was covered with smoke,because the Lord descended on it in fire. The smoke billowed up from it like smoke from a furnace, and the whole mountain[a] trembled violently. 19ย As the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and the voice of God answered him.[b]
20ย The Lord descended to the top of Mount Sinai and called Moses to the top of the mountain. So Moses went up 21ย and the Lord said to him, โGo down and warn the people so they do not force their way through to see the Lord and many of them perish. 22ย Even the priests, who approach the Lord, must consecrate themselves, or the Lord will break out against them.โ
23ย Moses said to the Lord, โThe people cannot come up Mount Sinai, because you yourself warned us, โPut limits around the mountain and set it apart as holy.โโ
24ย The Lord replied, โGo down and bring Aaron up with you. But the priests and the people must not force their way through to come up to the Lord, or he will break out against them.โ
25ย So Moses went down to the people and told them.
Exodus 20
The Ten Commandments
20ย And God spoke all these words:
2ย โI am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
3ย โYou shall have no other gods before[c] me.
4ย โYou shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5ย You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6ย but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7ย โYou shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
8ย โRemember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9ย Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10ย but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11ย For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
12ย โHonor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
13ย โYou shall not murder.
14ย โYou shall not commit adultery.
15ย โYou shall not steal.
16ย โYou shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
17ย โYou shall not covet your neighborโs house. You shall not covet your neighborโs wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.โ
18ย When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance19ย and said to Moses, โSpeak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.โ
20ย Moses said to the people, โDo not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.โ
21ย The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.
Idols and Altars
22ย Then the Lord said to Moses, โTell the Israelites this: โYou have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven: 23ย Do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.
24ย โโMake an altar of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you. 25ย If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it. 26ย And do not go up to my altar on steps, or your private parts may be exposed.โ
Exodus 21:1-21
21ย โThese are the laws you are to set before them:
Hebrew Servants
2ย โIf you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything. 3ย If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him. 4ย If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free.
5ย โBut if the servant declares, โI love my master and my wife and children and do not want to go free,โ 6ย then his master must take him before the judges.[d] He shall take him to the door or the doorpost and pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life.
7ย โIf a man sells his daughter as a servant, she is not to go free as male servants do. 8ย If she does not please the master who has selected her for himself,[e] he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to foreigners, because he has broken faith with her. 9ย If he selects her for his son, he must grant her the rights of a daughter. 10ย If he marries another woman, he must not deprive the first one of her food, clothing and marital rights. 11ย If he does not provide her with these three things, she is to go free, without any payment of money.
Personal Injuries
12ย โAnyone who strikes a person with a fatal blow is to be put to death. 13ย However, if it is not done intentionally, but God lets it happen, they are to flee to a place I will designate. 14ย But if anyone schemes and kills someone deliberately, that person is to be taken from my altar and put to death.
15ย โAnyone who attacks[f] their father or mother is to be put to death.
16ย โAnyone who kidnaps someone is to be put to death, whether the victim has been sold or is still in the kidnapperโs possession.
17ย โAnyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.
18ย โIf people quarrel and one person hits another with a stone or with their fist[g] and the victim does not die but is confined to bed, 19ย the one who struck the blow will not be held liable if the other can get up and walk around outside with a staff; however, the guilty party must pay the injured person for any loss of time and see that the victim is completely healed.
20ย โAnyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21ย but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.
Matthew 23:13-39
Seven Woes on the Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees
13ย โWoe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in peopleโs faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. [14]ย [a]
15ย โWoe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when you have succeeded, you make them twice as much a child of hell as you are.
16ย โWoe to you, blind guides! You say, โIf anyone swears by the temple, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gold of the temple is bound by that oath.โ 17ย You blind fools! Which is greater: the gold, or the temple that makes the gold sacred? 18ย You also say, โIf anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but anyone who swears by the gift on the altar is bound by that oath.โ 19ย You blind men! Which is greater: the gift, or the altar that makes the gift sacred?20ย Therefore, anyone who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. 21ย And anyone who swears by the temple swears by it and by the one who dwells in it. 22ย And anyone who swears by heaven swears by Godโs throne and by the one who sits on it.
23ย โWoe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spicesโmint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the lawโjustice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24ย You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
25ย โWoe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26ย Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean.
27ย โWoe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean. 28ย In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.
29ย โWoe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You build tombs for the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous. 30ย And you say, โIf we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.โ 31ย So you testify against yourselves that you are the descendants of those who murdered the prophets. 32ย Go ahead, then, and complete what your ancestors started!
33ย โYou snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell? 34ย Therefore I am sending you prophets and sages and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify; others you will flog in your synagogues and pursue from town to town. 35ย And so upon you will come all the righteous blood that has been shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar.36ย Truly I tell you, all this will come on this generation.
37ย โJerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing. 38ย Look, your house is left to you desolate. 39ย For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, โBlessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.โ[b]โ
Psalm 28
Psalm 28
Of David.
1ย To you, Lord, I call;
ย ย ย ย you are my Rock,
ย ย ย ย do not turn a deaf ear to me.
For if you remain silent,
ย ย ย ย I will be like those who go down to the pit.
2ย Hear my cry for mercy
ย ย ย ย as I call to you for help,
as I lift up my hands
ย ย ย ย toward your Most Holy Place.
3ย Do not drag me away with the wicked,
ย ย ย ย with those who do evil,
who speak cordially with their neighbors
ย ย ย ย but harbor malice in their hearts.
4ย Repay them for their deeds
ย ย ย ย and for their evil work;
repay them for what their hands have done
ย ย ย ย and bring back on them what they deserve.
5ย Because they have no regard for the deeds of the Lord
ย ย ย ย and what his hands have done,
he will tear them down
ย ย ย ย and never build them up again.
6ย Praise be to the Lord,
ย ย ย ย for he has heard my cry for mercy.
7ย The Lord is my strength and my shield;
ย ย ย ย my heart trusts in him, and he helps me.
My heart leaps for joy,
ย ย ย ย and with my song I praise him.
8ย The Lord is the strength of his people,
ย ย ย ย a fortress of salvation for his anointed one.
9ย Save your people and bless your inheritance;
ย ย ย ย be their shepherd and carry them forever.
Proverbs 7:1-5
Warning Against the Adulterous Woman
7ย My son, keep my words
ย ย ย ย and store up my commands within you.
2ย Keep my commands and you will live;
ย ย ย ย guard my teachings as the apple of your eye.
3ย Bind them on your fingers;
ย ย ย ย write them on the tablet of your heart.
4ย Say to wisdom, โYou are my sister,โ
ย ย ย ย and to insight, โYou are my relative.โ
5ย They will keep you from the adulterous woman,
ย ย ย ย from the wayward woman with her seductive words.
