Exodus 30:11-31:18
Atonement Money
11ย Then the Lord said to Moses, 12ย โWhen you take a census of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay the Lord a ransom for his life at the time he is counted. Then no plague will come on them when you number them. 13ย Each one who crosses over to those already counted is to give a half shekel,[a] according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs twenty gerahs. This half shekel is an offering to the Lord. 14ย All who cross over, those twenty years old or more, are to give an offering to the Lord. 15ย The rich are not to give more than a half shekel and the poor are not to give less when you make the offering to the Lord to atone for your lives. 16ย Receive the atonement money from the Israelites and use it for the service of the tent of meeting. It will be a memorial for the Israelites before the Lord, making atonement for your lives.โ
Basin for Washing
17ย Then the Lord said to Moses, 18ย โMake a bronze basin, with its bronze stand, for washing. Place it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water in it. 19ย Aaron and his sons are to wash their hands and feet with water from it. 20ย Whenever they enter the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water so that they will not die. Also, when they approach the altar to minister by presenting a food offering to the Lord, 21ย they shall wash their hands and feet so that they will not die. This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants for the generations to come.โ
Anointing Oil
22ย Then the Lord said to Moses, 23ย โTake the following fine spices: 500 shekels[b] of liquid myrrh, half as much (that is, 250 shekels) of fragrant cinnamon, 250 shekels[c] of fragrant calamus, 24ย 500 shekels of cassiaโall according to the sanctuary shekelโand a hin[d] of olive oil. 25ย Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil. 26ย Then use it to anoint the tent of meeting, the ark of the covenant law, 27ย the table and all its articles, the lampstand and its accessories, the altar of incense, 28ย the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the basin with its stand. 29ย You shall consecrate them so they will be most holy, and whatever touches them will be holy.
30ย โAnoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them so they may serve me as priests. 31ย Say to the Israelites, โThis is to be my sacred anointing oil for the generations to come. 32ย Do not pour it on anyone elseโs body and do not make any other oil using the same formula. It is sacred, and you are to consider it sacred. 33ย Whoever makes perfume like it and puts it on anyone other than a priest must be cut off from their people.โโ
Incense
34ย Then the Lord said to Moses, โTake fragrant spicesโgum resin, onycha and galbanumโand pure frankincense, all in equal amounts, 35ย and make a fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer. It is to be salted and pure and sacred. 36ย Grind some of it to powder and place it in front of the ark of the covenant law in the tent of meeting, where I will meet with you. It shall be most holy to you. 37ย Do not make any incense with this formula for yourselves; consider it holy to the Lord. 38ย Whoever makes incense like it to enjoy its fragrance must be cut off from their people.โ
Exodus 31:1-18
Bezalel and Oholiab
31ย Then the Lord said to Moses, 2ย โSee, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3ย and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skillsโ 4ย to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze,5ย to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts. 6ย Moreover, I have appointed Oholiab son of Ahisamak, of the tribe of Dan, to help him. Also I have given ability to all the skilled workers to make everything I have commanded you: 7ย the tent of meeting, the ark of the covenant law with the atonement cover on it, and all the other furnishings of the tentโ 8ย the table and its articles, the pure gold lampstand and all its accessories, the altar of incense, 9ย the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, the basin with its standโ 10ย and also the woven garments, both the sacred garments for Aaron the priest and the garments for his sons when they serve as priests, 11ย and the anointing oil and fragrant incense for the Holy Place. They are to make them just as I commanded you.โ
The Sabbath
12ย Then the Lord said to Moses, 13ย โSay to the Israelites, โYou must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and you for the generations to come, so you may know that I am the Lord, who makes you holy.
14ย โโObserve the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death; those who do any work on that day must be cut off from their people. 15ย For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of sabbath rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death. 16ย The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for the generations to come as a lasting covenant. 17ย It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever, for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.โโ
18ย When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone inscribed by the finger of God.
Matthew 26:47-68
Jesus Arrested
47ย While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48ย Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: โThe one I kiss is the man; arrest him.โ 49ย Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, โGreetings, Rabbi!โ and kissed him.
50ย Jesus replied, โDo what you came for, friend.โ[a]
Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51ย With that, one of Jesusโ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.
52ย โPut your sword back in its place,โ Jesus said to him, โfor all who draw the sword will die by the sword. 53ย Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54ย But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?โ
55ย In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, โAm I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. 56ย But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled.โ Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.
Jesus Before the Sanhedrin
57ย Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58ย But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.
59ย The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60ย But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward.
Finally two came forward 61ย and declared, โThis fellow said, โI am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.โโ
62ย Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, โAre you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?โ63ย But Jesus remained silent.
The high priest said to him, โI charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.โ
64ย โYou have said so,โ Jesus replied. โBut I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.โ[b]
65ย Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, โHe has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66ย What do you think?โ
โHe is worthy of death,โ they answered.
67ย Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him 68ย and said, โProphesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?โ
Psalm 32
Psalm 32
Of David. A maskil.[a]
1ย Blessed is the one
ย ย ย ย whose transgressions are forgiven,
ย ย ย ย whose sins are covered.
2ย Blessed is the one
ย ย ย ย whose sin the Lord does not count against them
ย ย ย ย and in whose spirit is no deceit.
3ย When I kept silent,
ย ย ย ย my bones wasted away
ย ย ย ย through my groaning all day long.
4ย For day and night
ย ย ย ย your hand was heavy on me;
my strength was sapped
ย ย ย ย as in the heat of summer.[b]
5ย Then I acknowledged my sin to you
ย ย ย ย and did not cover up my iniquity.
I said, โI will confess
ย ย ย ย my transgressions to the Lord.โ
And you forgave
ย ย ย ย the guilt of my sin.
6ย Therefore let all the faithful pray to you
ย ย ย ย while you may be found;
surely the rising of the mighty waters
ย ย ย ย will not reach them.
7ย You are my hiding place;
ย ย ย ย you will protect me from trouble
ย ย ย ย and surround me with songs of deliverance.
8ย I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
ย ย ย ย I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
9ย Do not be like the horse or the mule,
ย ย ย ย which have no understanding
but must be controlled by bit and bridle
ย ย ย ย or they will not come to you.
10ย Many are the woes of the wicked,
ย ย ย ย but the Lordโs unfailing love
ย ย ย ย surrounds the one who trusts in him.
11ย Rejoice in the Lord and be glad, you righteous;
ย ย ย ย sing, all you who are upright in heart!
Proverbs 8:27-32
27ย I was there when he set the heavens in place,
ย ย ย ย when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,
28ย when he established the clouds above
ย ย ย ย and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,
29ย when he gave the sea its boundary
ย ย ย ย so the waters would not overstep his command,
and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.
30ย ย ย ย ย Then I was constantly[a] at his side.
I was filled with delight day after day,
ย ย ย ย rejoicing always in his presence,
31ย rejoicing in his whole world
ย ย ย ย and delighting in mankind.
32ย โNow then, my children, listen to me;
ย ย ย ย blessed are those who keep my ways.
