Numbers 4-5
The Kohathites
4ย The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: 2ย โTake a census of the Kohathite branch of the Levites by their clans and families. 3ย Count all the men from thirty to fifty years of age who come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting.
4ย โThis is the work of the Kohathites at the tent of meeting: the care of the most holy things. 5ย When the camp is to move, Aaron and his sons are to go in and take down the shielding curtain and put it over the ark of the covenant law. 6ย Then they are to cover the curtain with a durable leather,[a] spread a cloth of solid blue over that and put the poles in place.
7ย โOver the table of the Presence they are to spread a blue cloth and put on it the plates, dishes and bowls, and the jars for drink offerings; the bread that is continually there is to remain on it. 8ย They are to spread a scarlet cloth over them, cover that with the durable leather and put the poles in place.
9ย โThey are to take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand that is for light, together with its lamps, its wick trimmers and trays, and all its jars for the olive oil used to supply it. 10ย Then they are to wrap it and all its accessories in a covering of the durable leather and put it on a carrying frame.
11ย โOver the gold altar they are to spread a blue cloth and cover that with the durable leather and put the poles in place.
12ย โThey are to take all the articles used for ministering in the sanctuary, wrap them in a blue cloth, cover that with the durable leather and put them on a carrying frame.
13ย โThey are to remove the ashes from the bronze altar and spread a purple cloth over it. 14ย Then they are to place on it all the utensils used for ministering at the altar, including the firepans, meat forks, shovels and sprinkling bowls. Over it they are to spread a covering of the durable leather and put the poles in place.
15ย โAfter Aaron and his sons have finished covering the holy furnishings and all the holy articles, and when the camp is ready to move, only then are the Kohathites to come and do the carrying. But they must not touch the holy things or they will die. The Kohathites are to carry those things that are in the tent of meeting.
16ย โEleazar son of Aaron, the priest, is to have charge of the oil for the light, the fragrant incense, the regular grain offering and the anointing oil. He is to be in charge of the entire tabernacle and everything in it, including its holy furnishings and articles.โ
17ย The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 18ย โSee that the Kohathite tribal clans are not destroyed from among the Levites. 19ย So that they may live and not die when they come near the most holy things, do this for them: Aaron and his sons are to go into the sanctuary and assign to each man his work and what he is to carry. 20ย But the Kohathites must not go in to lookat the holy things, even for a moment, or they will die.โ
The Gershonites
21ย The Lord said to Moses, 22ย โTake a census also of the Gershonites by their families and clans. 23ย Count all the men from thirty to fifty years of age who come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting.
24ย โThis is the service of the Gershonite clans in their carrying and their other work: 25ย They are to carry the curtains of the tabernacle, that is, the tent of meeting, its covering and its outer covering of durable leather, the curtains for the entrance to the tent of meeting, 26ย the curtains of the courtyard surrounding the tabernacle and altar, the curtain for the entrance to the courtyard, the ropes and all the equipment used in the service of the tent. The Gershonites are to do all that needs to be done with these things. 27ย All their service, whether carrying or doing other work, is to be done under the direction of Aaron and his sons. You shall assign to them as their responsibility all they are to carry. 28ย This is the service of the Gershonite clans at the tent of meeting. Their duties are to be under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron, the priest.
The Merarites
29ย โCount the Merarites by their clans and families. 30ย Count all the men from thirty to fifty years of age who come to serve in the work at the tent of meeting. 31ย As part of all their service at the tent, they are to carry the frames of the tabernacle, its crossbars, posts and bases, 32ย as well as the posts of the surrounding courtyard with their bases, tent pegs, ropes, all their equipment and everything related to their use. Assign to each man the specific things he is to carry. 33ย This is the service of the Merarite clans as they work at the tent of meeting under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron, the priest.โ
The Numbering of the Levite Clans
34ย Moses, Aaron and the leaders of the community counted the Kohathites by their clans and families. 35ย All the men from thirty to fifty years of age who came to serve in the work at the tent of meeting, 36ย counted by clans, were 2,750. 37ย This was the total of all those in the Kohathite clans who served at the tent of meeting. Moses and Aaron counted them according to the Lordโs command through Moses.
38ย The Gershonites were counted by their clans and families. 39ย All the men from thirty to fifty years of age who came to serve in the work at the tent of meeting, 40ย counted by their clans and families, were 2,630. 41ย This was the total of those in the Gershonite clans who served at the tent of meeting. Moses and Aaron counted them according to the Lordโs command.
42ย The Merarites were counted by their clans and families. 43ย All the men from thirty to fifty years of age who came to serve in the work at the tent of meeting, 44ย counted by their clans, were 3,200. 45ย This was the total of those in the Merarite clans. Moses and Aaron counted them according to the Lordโs command through Moses.
46ย So Moses, Aaron and the leaders of Israel counted all the Levites by their clans and families. 47ย All the men from thirty to fifty years of age who came to do the work of serving and carrying the tent of meeting 48ย numbered 8,580. 49ย At the Lordโs command through Moses, each was assigned his work and told what to carry.
Thus they were counted, as the Lord commanded Moses.
Numbers 5
The Purity of the Camp
5ย The Lord said to Moses, 2ย โCommand the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone who has a defiling skin disease[b] or a discharge of any kind, or who is ceremonially uncleanbecause of a dead body. 3ย Send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.โ 4ย The Israelites did so; they sent them outside the camp. They did just as the Lord had instructed Moses.
Restitution for Wrongs
5ย The Lord said to Moses, 6ย โSay to the Israelites: โAny man or woman who wrongs another in any way[c] and so is unfaithful to the Lord is guilty 7ย and must confess the sin they have committed. They must make full restitution for the wrong they have done, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the person they have wronged. 8ย But if that person has no close relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong, the restitution belongs to the Lord and must be given to the priest, along with the ram with which atonement is made for the wrongdoer. 9ย All the sacred contributions the Israelites bring to a priest will belong to him. 10ย Sacred things belong to their owners, but what they give to the priest will belong to the priest.โโ
The Test for an Unfaithful Wife
11ย Then the Lord said to Moses, 12ย โSpeak to the Israelites and say to them: โIf a manโs wife goes astray and is unfaithful to him 13ย so that another man has sexual relations with her, and this is hidden from her husband and her impurity is undetected (since there is no witness against her and she has not been caught in the act), 14ย and if feelings of jealousy come over her husband and he suspects his wife and she is impureโor if he is jealous and suspects her even though she is not impureโ 15ย then he is to take his wife to the priest. He must also take an offering of a tenth of an ephah[d] of barley flour on her behalf. He must not pour olive oil on it or put incense on it, because it is a grain offering for jealousy, a reminder-offering to draw attention to wrongdoing.
16ย โโThe priest shall bring her and have her stand before the Lord. 17ย Then he shall take some holy water in a clay jar and put some dust from the tabernacle floor into the water. 18ย After the priest has had the woman stand before the Lord, he shall loosen her hair and place in her hands the reminder-offering, the grain offering for jealousy, while he himself holds the bitter water that brings a curse. 19ย Then the priest shall put the woman under oath and say to her, โIf no other man has had sexual relations with you and you have not gone astray and become impure while married to your husband, may this bitter water that brings a curse not harm you. 20ย But if you have gone astray while married to your husband and you have made yourself impure by having sexual relations with a man other than your husbandโโ 21ย here the priest is to put the woman under this curseโโmay the Lord cause you to become a curse[e]among your people when he makes your womb miscarry and your abdomen swell. 22ย May this water that brings a curse enter your body so that your abdomen swells or your womb miscarries.โ
โโThen the woman is to say, โAmen. So be it.โ
23ย โโThe priest is to write these curses on a scroll and then wash them off into the bitter water. 24ย He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse, and this water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering will enter her. 25ย The priest is to take from her hands the grain offering for jealousy, wave it before the Lord and bring it to the altar. 26ย The priest is then to take a handful of the grain offering as a memorial[f] offering and burn it on the altar; after that, he is to have the woman drink the water. 27ย If she has made herself impure and been unfaithful to her husband, this will be the result: When she is made to drink the water that brings a curse and causes bitter suffering, it will enter her, her abdomen will swell and her womb will miscarry, and she will become a curse. 28ย If, however, the woman has not made herself impure, but is clean, she will be cleared of guilt and will be able to have children.
29ย โโThis, then, is the law of jealousy when a woman goes astray and makes herself impure while married to her husband, 30ย or when feelings of jealousy come over a man because he suspects his wife. The priest is to have her stand before the Lord and is to apply this entire law to her. 31ย The husband will be innocent of any wrongdoing, but the woman will bear the consequences of her sin.โโ
Mark 12:18-37
Marriage at the Resurrection
18ย Then the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. 19ย โTeacher,โ they said, โMoses wrote for us that if a manโs brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. 20ย Now there were seven brothers. The first one married and died without leaving any children. 21ย The second one married the widow, but he also died, leaving no child. It was the same with the third. 22ย In fact, none of the seven left any children. Last of all, the woman died too. 23ย At the resurrection[a] whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?โ
24ย Jesus replied, โAre you not in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God? 25ย When the dead rise, they will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. 26ย Now about the dead risingโhave you not read in the Book of Moses, in the account of the burning bush, how God said to him, โI am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacobโ[b]? 27ย He is not the God of the dead, but of the living. You are badly mistaken!โ
The Greatest Commandment
28ย One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, โOf all the commandments, which is the most important?โ
29ย โThe most important one,โ answered Jesus, โis this: โHear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.[c] 30ย Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.โ[d] 31ย The second is this: โLove your neighbor as yourself.โ[e] There is no commandment greater than these.โ
32ย โWell said, teacher,โ the man replied. โYou are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. 33ย To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.โ
34ย When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, โYou are not far from the kingdom of God.โ And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.
Whose Son Is the Messiah?
35ย While Jesus was teaching in the temple courts, he asked, โWhy do the teachers of the law say that the Messiah is the son of David? 36ย David himself, speaking by the Holy Spirit, declared:
โโThe Lord said to my Lord:
ย ย ย ย โSit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
ย ย ย ย under your feet.โโ[f]
37ย David himself calls him โLord.โ How then can he be his son?โ
The large crowd listened to him with delight.
Psalm 48
A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah.
1ย Great is the Lord, and most worthy of praise,
ย ย ย ย in the city of our God, his holy mountain.
2ย Beautiful in its loftiness,
ย ย ย ย the joy of the whole earth,
like the heights of Zaphon[b] is Mount Zion,
ย ย ย ย the city of the Great King.
3ย God is in her citadels;
ย ย ย ย he has shown himself to be her fortress.
4ย When the kings joined forces,
ย ย ย ย when they advanced together,
5ย they saw her and were astounded;
ย ย ย ย they fled in terror.
6ย Trembling seized them there,
ย ย ย ย pain like that of a woman in labor.
7ย You destroyed them like ships of Tarshish
ย ย ย ย shattered by an east wind.
8ย As we have heard,
ย ย ย ย so we have seen
in the city of the Lord Almighty,
ย ย ย ย in the city of our God:
God makes her secure
ย ย ย ย forever.[c]
9ย Within your temple, O God,
ย ย ย ย we meditate on your unfailing love.
10ย Like your name, O God,
ย ย ย ย your praise reaches to the ends of the earth;
ย ย ย ย your right hand is filled with righteousness.
11ย Mount Zion rejoices,
ย ย ย ย the villages of Judah are glad
ย ย ย ย because of your judgments.
12ย Walk about Zion, go around her,
ย ย ย ย count her towers,
13ย consider well her ramparts,
ย ย ย ย view her citadels,
that you may tell of them
ย ย ย ย to the next generation.
14ย For this God is our God for ever and ever;
ย ย ย ย he will be our guide even to the end.
Proverbs 10:26
26ย As vinegar to the teeth and smoke to the eyes,
ย ย ย ย so are sluggards to those who send them.
