Numbers 24-25
24ย Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel, he did not resort to divination as at other times, but turned his face toward the wilderness. 2ย When Balaam looked out and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came on him 3ย and he spoke his message:
โThe prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,
ย ย ย ย the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,
4ย the prophecy of one who hears the words of God,
ย ย ย ย who sees a vision from the Almighty,[a]
ย ย ย ย who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:
5ย โHow beautiful are your tents, Jacob,
ย ย ย ย your dwelling places, Israel!
6ย โLike valleys they spread out,
ย ย ย ย like gardens beside a river,
like aloes planted by the Lord,
ย ย ย ย like cedars beside the waters.
7ย Water will flow from their buckets;
ย ย ย ย their seed will have abundant water.
โTheir king will be greater than Agag;
ย ย ย ย their kingdom will be exalted.
8ย โGod brought them out of Egypt;
ย ย ย ย they have the strength of a wild ox.
They devour hostile nations
ย ย ย ย and break their bones in pieces;
ย ย ย ย with their arrows they pierce them.
9ย Like a lion they crouch and lie down,
ย ย ย ย like a lionessโwho dares to rouse them?
โMay those who bless you be blessed
ย ย ย ย and those who curse you be cursed!โ
10ย Then Balakโs anger burned against Balaam. He struck his hands together and said to him, โI summoned you to curse my enemies, but you have blessed them these three times. 11ย Now leave at once and go home! I said I would reward you handsomely, but the Lord has kept you from being rewarded.โ
12ย Balaam answered Balak, โDid I not tell the messengers you sent me, 13ย โEven if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the Lordโand I must say only what the Lord saysโ? 14ย Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come.โ
Balaamโs Fourth Message
15ย Then he spoke his message:
โThe prophecy of Balaam son of Beor,
ย ย ย ย the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,
16ย the prophecy of one who hears the words of God,
ย ย ย ย who has knowledge from the Most High,
who sees a vision from the Almighty,
ย ย ย ย who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:
17ย โI see him, but not now;
ย ย ย ย I behold him, but not near.
A star will come out of Jacob;
ย ย ย ย a scepter will rise out of Israel.
He will crush the foreheads of Moab,
ย ย ย ย the skulls[b] of[c] all the people of Sheth.[d]
18ย Edom will be conquered;
ย ย ย ย Seir, his enemy, will be conquered,
ย ย ย ย but Israel will grow strong.
19ย A ruler will come out of Jacob
ย ย ย ย and destroy the survivors of the city.โ
Balaamโs Fifth Message
20ย Then Balaam saw Amalek and spoke his message:
โAmalek was first among the nations,
ย ย ย ย but their end will be utter destruction.โ
Balaamโs Sixth Message
21ย Then he saw the Kenites and spoke his message:
โYour dwelling place is secure,
ย ย ย ย your nest is set in a rock;
22ย yet you Kenites will be destroyed
ย ย ย ย when Ashur takes you captive.โ
Balaamโs Seventh Message
23ย Then he spoke his message:
โAlas! Who can live when God does this?[e]
24ย ย ย ย ย Ships will come from the shores of Cyprus;
they will subdue Ashur and Eber,
ย ย ย ย but they too will come to ruin.โ
25ย Then Balaam got up and returned home, and Balak went his own way.
Numbers 25
Moab Seduces Israel
25ย While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, 2ย who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. 3ย So Israel yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor. And the Lordโs anger burned against them.
4ย The Lord said to Moses, โTake all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before the Lord, so that the Lordโs fierce angermay turn away from Israel.โ
5ย So Moses said to Israelโs judges, โEach of you must put to death those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.โ
6ย Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weepingat the entrance to the tent of meeting. 7ย When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand8ย and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the womanโs stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped; 9ย but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.
10ย The Lord said to Moses, 11ย โPhinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honor among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12ย Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace with him. 13ย He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor of his God and made atonement for the Israelites.โ
14ย The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family. 15ย And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.
16ย The Lord said to Moses, 17ย โTreat the Midianites as enemies and kill them. 18ย They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incidentinvolving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.โ
Luke 2:1-35
The Birth of Jesus
2ย In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. 2ย (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.) 3ย And everyone went to their own town to register.
4ย So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5ย He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6ย While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7ย and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
8ย And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9ย An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10ย But the angel said to them, โDo not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11ย Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12ย This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.โ
13ย Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14ย โGlory to God in the highest heaven,
ย ย ย ย and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.โ
15ย When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, โLetโs go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.โ
16ย So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. 17ย When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18ย and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19ย But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20ย The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
21ย On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child, he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.
Jesus Presented in the Temple
22ย When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23ย (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, โEvery firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lordโ[b]), 24ย and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: โa pair of doves or two young pigeons.โ[c]
25ย Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26ย It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lordโs Messiah. 27ย Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28ย Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29ย โSovereign Lord, as you have promised,
ย ย ย ย you may now dismiss[d] your servant in peace.
30ย For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31ย ย ย ย ย which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32ย a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
ย ย ย ย and the glory of your people Israel.โ
33ย The childโs father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34ย Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: โThis child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35ย so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.โ
Psalm 59
For the director of music. To the tune of โDo Not Destroy.โ Of David. A miktam.[b] When Saul had sent men to watch Davidโs house in order to kill him.
1ย Deliver me from my enemies, O God;
ย ย ย ย be my fortress against those who are attacking me.
2ย Deliver me from evildoers
ย ย ย ย and save me from those who are after my blood.
3ย See how they lie in wait for me!
ย ย ย ย Fierce men conspire against me
ย ย ย ย for no offense or sin of mine, Lord.
4ย I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me.
ย ย ย ย Arise to help me; look on my plight!
5ย You, Lord God Almighty,
ย ย ย ย you who are the God of Israel,
rouse yourself to punish all the nations;
ย ย ย ย show no mercy to wicked traitors.[c]
6ย They return at evening,
ย ย ย ย snarling like dogs,
ย ย ย ย and prowl about the city.
7ย See what they spew from their mouthsโ
ย ย ย ย the words from their lips are sharp as swords,
ย ย ย ย and they think, โWho can hear us?โ
8ย But you laugh at them, Lord;
ย ย ย ย you scoff at all those nations.
9ย You are my strength, I watch for you;
ย ย ย ย you, God, are my fortress,
10ย ย ย ย ย my God on whom I can rely.
God will go before me
ย ย ย ย and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
11ย But do not kill them, Lord our shield,[d]
ย ย ย ย or my people will forget.
In your might uproot them
ย ย ย ย and bring them down.
12ย For the sins of their mouths,
ย ย ย ย for the words of their lips,
ย ย ย ย let them be caught in their pride.
For the curses and lies they utter,
13ย ย ย ย ย consume them in your wrath,
ย ย ย ย consume them till they are no more.
Then it will be known to the ends of the earth
ย ย ย ย that God rules over Jacob.
14ย They return at evening,
ย ย ย ย snarling like dogs,
ย ย ย ย and prowl about the city.
15ย They wander about for food
ย ย ย ย and howl if not satisfied.
16ย But I will sing of your strength,
ย ย ย ย in the morning I will sing of your love;
for you are my fortress,
ย ย ย ย my refuge in times of trouble.
17ย You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
ย ย ย ย you, God, are my fortress,
ย ย ย ย my God on whom I can rely.
Proverbs 11:14
14ย For lack of guidance a nation falls,
ย ย ย ย but victory is won through many advisers.
