Numbers 8-9
Setting Up the Lamps
8ย The Lord said to Moses, 2ย โSpeak to Aaron and say to him, โWhen you set up the lamps, see that all seven light up the area in front of the lampstand.โโ
3ย Aaron did so; he set up the lamps so that they faced forward on the lampstand, just as the Lord commanded Moses. 4ย This is how the lampstand was made: It was made of hammered goldโfrom its base to its blossoms. The lampstand was made exactly like the pattern the Lord had shown Moses.
The Setting Apart of the Levites
5ย The Lord said to Moses: 6ย โTake the Levites from among all the Israelites and make them ceremonially clean. 7ย To purify them, do this: Sprinkle the water of cleansing on them; then have them shave their whole bodies and wash their clothes. And so they will purify themselves. 8ย Have them take a young bull with its grain offering of the finest flour mixed with olive oil; then you are to take a second young bull for a sin offering.[a] 9ย Bring the Levites to the front of the tent of meeting and assemble the whole Israelite community. 10ย You are to bring the Levites before the Lord, and the Israelites are to lay their hands on them. 11ย Aaron is to present the Levites before the Lord as a wave offering from the Israelites, so that they may be ready to do the work of the Lord.
12ย โThen the Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, using one for a sin offering to the Lord and the other for a burnt offering, to make atonement for the Levites. 13ย Have the Levites stand in front of Aaron and his sons and then present them as a wave offering to the Lord. 14ย In this way you are to set the Levites apart from the other Israelites, and the Levites will be mine.
15ย โAfter you have purified the Levites and presented them as a wave offering, they are to come to do their work at the tent of meeting. 16ย They are the Israelites who are to be given wholly to me. I have taken them as my own in place of the firstborn, the first male offspring from every Israelite woman. 17ย Every firstborn male in Israel, whether human or animal, is mine. When I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt, I set them apart for myself. 18ย And I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn sons in Israel. 19ย From among all the Israelites, I have given the Levites as gifts to Aaron and his sons to do the work at the tent of meeting on behalf of the Israelites and to make atonement for them so that no plague will strike the Israelites when they go near the sanctuary.โ
20ย Moses, Aaron and the whole Israelite community did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses. 21ย The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes. Then Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the Lord and made atonement for them to purify them. 22ย After that, the Levites came to do their work at the tent of meeting under the supervision of Aaron and his sons. They did with the Levites just as the Lord commanded Moses.
23ย The Lord said to Moses, 24ย โThis applies to the Levites: Men twenty-five years old or more shall come to take part in the work at the tent of meeting, 25ย but at the age of fifty, they must retire from their regular service and work no longer. 26ย They may assist their brothers in performing their duties at the tent of meeting, but they themselves must not do the work.This, then, is how you are to assign the responsibilities of the Levites.โ
Numbers 9
The Passover
9ย The Lord spoke to Moses in the Desert of Sinai in the first month of the second year after they came out of Egypt. He said, 2ย โHave the Israelites celebrate the Passover at the appointed time. 3ย Celebrate it at the appointed time, at twilight on the fourteenth day of this month, in accordance with all its rules and regulations.โ
4ย So Moses told the Israelites to celebrate the Passover, 5ย and they did so in the Desert of Sinai at twilight on the fourteenth day of the first month. The Israelites did everything just as the Lord commanded Moses.
6ย But some of them could not celebrate the Passover on that day because they were ceremonially unclean on account of a dead body. So they came to Moses and Aaron that same day7ย and said to Moses, โWe have become unclean because of a dead body, but why should we be kept from presenting the Lordโs offering with the other Israelites at the appointed time?โ
8ย Moses answered them, โWait until I find out what the Lord commands concerning you.โ
9ย Then the Lord said to Moses, 10ย โTell the Israelites: โWhen any of you or your descendants are unclean because of a dead body or are away on a journey, they are still to celebrate the Lordโs Passover, 11ย but they are to do it on the fourteenth day of the second month at twilight. They are to eat the lamb, together with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 12ย They must not leave any of it till morning or break any of its bones. When they celebrate the Passover, they must follow all the regulations. 13ย But if anyone who is ceremonially clean and not on a journey fails to celebrate the Passover, they must be cut off from their people for not presenting the Lordโs offering at the appointed time. They will bear the consequences of their sin.
14ย โโA foreigner residing among you is also to celebrate the Lordโs Passover in accordance with its rules and regulations. You must have the same regulations for both the foreigner and the native-born.โโ
The Cloud Above the Tabernacle
15ย On the day the tabernacle, the tent of the covenant law, was set up, the cloud covered it. From evening till morning the cloud above the tabernacle looked like fire. 16ย That is how it continued to be; the cloud covered it, and at night it looked like fire. 17ย Whenever the cloud lifted from above the tent, the Israelites set out; wherever the cloud settled, the Israelites encamped. 18ย At the Lordโs command the Israelites set out, and at his command they encamped. As long as the cloud stayed over the tabernacle, they remained in camp. 19ย When the cloud remained over the tabernacle a long time, the Israelites obeyed the Lordโs order and did not set out. 20ย Sometimes the cloud was over the tabernacle only a few days; at the Lordโs command they would encamp, and then at his command they would set out. 21ย Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening till morning, and when it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night, whenever the cloud lifted, they set out. 22ย Whether the cloud stayed over the tabernacle for two days or a month or a year, the Israelites would remain in camp and not set out; but when it lifted, they would set out. 23ย At the Lordโs command they encamped, and at the Lordโs command they set out. They obeyed the Lordโs order, in accordance with his command through Moses.
Mark 13:14-37
14ย โWhen you see โthe abomination that causes desolationโ[a] standing where it[b] does not belongโlet the reader understandโthen let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.15ย Let no one on the housetop go down or enter the house to take anything out. 16ย Let no one in the field go back to get their cloak. 17ย How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! 18ย Pray that this will not take place in winter, 19ย because those will be days of distress unequaled from the beginning, when God created the world, until nowโand never to be equaled again.
20ย โIf the Lord had not cut short those days, no one would survive. But for the sake of the elect, whom he has chosen, he has shortened them. 21ย At that time if anyone says to you, โLook, here is the Messiah!โ or, โLook, there he is!โ do not believe it. 22ย For false messiahs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. 23ย So be on your guard; I have told you everything ahead of time.
24ย โBut in those days, following that distress,
โโthe sun will be darkened,
ย ย ย ย and the moon will not give its light;
25ย the stars will fall from the sky,
ย ย ย ย and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.โ[c]
26ย โAt that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. 27ย And he will send his angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of the heavens.
28ย โNow learn this lesson from the fig tree: As soon as its twigs get tender and its leaves come out, you know that summer is near. 29ย Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that it[d] is near, right at the door. 30ย Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 31ย Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
The Day and Hour Unknown
32ย โBut about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33ย Be on guard! Be alert[e]! You do not know when that time will come.34ย Itโs like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch.
35ย โTherefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come backโwhether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36ย If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37ย What I say to you, I say to everyone: โWatch!โโ
Psalm 50
A psalm of Asaph.
1ย The Mighty One, God, the Lord,
ย ย ย ย speaks and summons the earth
ย ย ย ย from the rising of the sun to where it sets.
2ย From Zion, perfect in beauty,
ย ย ย ย God shines forth.
3ย Our God comes
ย ย ย ย and will not be silent;
a fire devours before him,
ย ย ย ย and around him a tempest rages.
4ย He summons the heavens above,
ย ย ย ย and the earth, that he may judge his people:
5ย โGather to me this consecrated people,
ย ย ย ย who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.โ
6ย And the heavens proclaim his righteousness,
ย ย ย ย for he is a God of justice.[a][b]
7ย โListen, my people, and I will speak;
ย ย ย ย I will testify against you, Israel:
ย ย ย ย I am God, your God.
8ย I bring no charges against you concerning your sacrifices
ย ย ย ย or concerning your burnt offerings, which are ever before me.
9ย I have no need of a bull from your stall
ย ย ย ย or of goats from your pens,
10ย for every animal of the forest is mine,
ย ย ย ย and the cattle on a thousand hills.
11ย I know every bird in the mountains,
ย ย ย ย and the insects in the fields are mine.
12ย If I were hungry I would not tell you,
ย ย ย ย for the world is mine, and all that is in it.
13ย Do I eat the flesh of bulls
ย ย ย ย or drink the blood of goats?
14ย โSacrifice thank offerings to God,
ย ย ย ย fulfill your vows to the Most High,
15ย and call on me in the day of trouble;
ย ย ย ย I will deliver you, and you will honor me.โ
16ย But to the wicked person, God says:
โWhat right have you to recite my laws
ย ย ย ย or take my covenant on your lips?
17ย You hate my instruction
ย ย ย ย and cast my words behind you.
18ย When you see a thief, you join with him;
ย ย ย ย you throw in your lot with adulterers.
19ย You use your mouth for evil
ย ย ย ย and harness your tongue to deceit.
20ย You sit and testify against your brother
ย ย ย ย and slander your own motherโs son.
21ย When you did these things and I kept silent,
ย ย ย ย you thought I was exactly[c] like you.
But I now arraign you
ย ย ย ย and set my accusations before you.
22ย โConsider this, you who forget God,
ย ย ย ย or I will tear you to pieces, with no one to rescue you:
23ย Those who sacrifice thank offerings honor me,
ย ย ย ย and to the blameless[d] I will show my salvation.โ
Proverbs 10:29-30
29ย The way of the Lord is a refuge for the blameless,
ย ย ย ย but it is the ruin of those who do evil.
30ย The righteous will never be uprooted,
ย ย ย ย but the wicked will not remain in the land.
