Leviticus 9:7-10:20
7Â Moses said to Aaron, âCome to the altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering and make atonement for yourself and the people; sacrifice the offering that is for the people and make atonement for them, as the Lord has commanded.â
8Â So Aaron came to the altar and slaughtered the calf as a sin offering for himself. 9Â His sons brought the blood to him, and he dipped his finger into the blood and put it on the horns of the altar; the rest of the blood he poured out at the base of the altar. 10Â On the altar he burned the fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver from the sin offering, as the Lord commanded Moses; 11Â the flesh and the hide he burned up outside the camp.
12Â Then he slaughtered the burnt offering. His sons handed him the blood, and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. 13Â They handed him the burnt offering piece by piece, including the head, and he burned them on the altar. 14Â He washed the internal organs and the legs and burned them on top of the burnt offering on the altar.
15Â Aaron then brought the offering that was for the people. He took the goat for the peopleâs sin offering and slaughtered it and offered it for a sin offering as he did with the first one.
16Â He brought the burnt offering and offered it in the prescribed way. 17Â He also brought the grain offering, took a handful of it and burned it on the altar in addition to the morningâs burnt offering.
18Â He slaughtered the ox and the ram as the fellowship offering for the people. His sons handed him the blood, and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. 19Â But the fat portions of the ox and the ramâthe fat tail, the layer of fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liverâ 20Â these they laid on the breasts, and then Aaron burned the fat on the altar. 21Â Aaron waved the breasts and the right thigh before the Lord as a wave offering, as Moses commanded.
22Â Then Aaron lifted his hands toward the people and blessed them. And having sacrificed the sin offering, the burnt offering and the fellowship offering, he stepped down.
23Â Moses and Aaron then went into the tent of meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. 24Â Fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown.
Leviticus 10:1-20
The Death of Nadab and Abihu
10Â Aaronâs sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command. 2Â So fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. 3Â Moses then said to Aaron, âThis is what the Lord spoke of when he said:
ââAmong those who approach me
    I will be proved holy;
in the sight of all the people
    I will be honored.ââ
Aaron remained silent.
4Â Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaronâs uncle Uzziel, and said to them, âCome here; carry your cousins outside the camp, away from the front of the sanctuary.â 5Â So they came and carried them, still in their tunics, outside the camp, as Moses ordered.
6Â Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, âDo not let your hair become unkempt[a] and do not tear your clothes, or you will die and the Lord will be angry with the whole community. But your relatives, all the Israelites, may mourn for those the Lord has destroyed by fire. 7Â Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting or you will die, because the Lordâs anointing oil is on you.â So they did as Moses said.
8Â Then the Lord said to Aaron, 9Â âYou and your sons are not to drink wine or other fermented drink whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, 10Â so that you can distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean, 11Â and so you can teach the Israelites all the decrees the Lord has given them through Moses.â
12Â Moses said to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, âTake the grain offering left over from the food offerings prepared without yeast and presented to the Lord and eat it beside the altar, for it is most holy. 13Â Eat it in the sanctuary area, because it is your share and your sonsâ share of the food offerings presented to the Lord; for so I have been commanded. 14Â But you and your sons and your daughters may eat the breast that was waved and the thigh that was presented. Eat them in a ceremonially clean place; they have been given to you and your children as your share of the Israelitesâ fellowship offerings. 15Â The thigh that was presented and the breast that was waved must be brought with the fat portions of the food offerings, to be waved before the Lord as a wave offering. This will be the perpetual share for you and your children, as the Lord has commanded.â
16Â When Moses inquired about the goat of the sin offering[b] and found that it had been burned up, he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaronâs remaining sons, and asked, 17Â âWhy didnât you eat the sin offering in the sanctuary area? It is most holy; it was given to you to take away the guilt of the community by making atonement for them before the Lord. 18Â Since its blood was not taken into the Holy Place, you should have eaten the goat in the sanctuary area, as I commanded.â
19Â Aaron replied to Moses, âToday they sacrificed their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord, but such things as this have happened to me. Would the Lord have been pleased if I had eaten the sin offering today?â 20Â When Moses heard this, he was satisfied.
Mark 4:26-5:20
The Parable of the Growing Seed
26Â He also said, âThis is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. 27Â Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28Â All by itself the soil produces grainâfirst the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head.29Â As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come.â
The Parable of the Mustard Seed
30Â Again he said, âWhat shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? 31Â It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. 32Â Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.â
33Â With many similar parables Jesus spoke the word to them, as much as they could understand. 34Â He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.
Jesus Calms the Storm
35Â That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, âLet us go over to the other side.â 36Â Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. 37Â A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped.38Â Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, âTeacher, donât you care if we drown?â
39Â He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, âQuiet! Be still!â Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.
40Â He said to his disciples, âWhy are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?â
41Â They were terrified and asked each other, âWho is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!â
Mark 5:1-20
Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man
5Â They went across the lake to the region of the Gerasenes.[a] 2Â When Jesus got out of the boat, a man with an impure spirit came from the tombs to meet him. 3Â This man lived in the tombs, and no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain. 4Â For he had often been chained hand and foot, but he tore the chains apart and broke the irons on his feet. No one was strong enough to subdue him. 5Â Night and day among the tombs and in the hills he would cry out and cut himself with stones.
6Â When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and fell on his knees in front of him. 7Â He shouted at the top of his voice, âWhat do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? In Godâs name donât torture me!â 8Â For Jesus had said to him, âCome out of this man, you impure spirit!â
9Â Then Jesus asked him, âWhat is your name?â
âMy name is Legion,â he replied, âfor we are many.â 10Â And he begged Jesus again and again not to send them out of the area.
11Â A large herd of pigs was feeding on the nearby hillside. 12Â The demons begged Jesus, âSend us among the pigs; allow us to go into them.â 13Â He gave them permission, and the impure spirits came out and went into the pigs. The herd, about two thousand in number, rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned.
14Â Those tending the pigs ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, and the people went out to see what had happened. 15Â When they came to Jesus, they saw the man who had been possessed by the legion of demons, sitting there, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16Â Those who had seen it told the people what had happened to the demon-possessed manâand told about the pigs as well. 17Â Then the people began to plead with Jesus to leave their region.
18Â As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged to go with him. 19Â Jesus did not let him, but said, âGo home to your own people and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.â 20Â So the man went away and began to tell in the Decapolis[b] how much Jesus had done for him. And all the people were amazed.
Psalm 37:30-40
30Â The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom,
    and their tongues speak what is just.
31Â The law of their God is in their hearts;
    their feet do not slip.
32Â The wicked lie in wait for the righteous,
    intent on putting them to death;
33Â but the Lord will not leave them in the power of the wicked
    or let them be condemned when brought to trial.
34Â Hope in the Lord
    and keep his way.
He will exalt you to inherit the land;
    when the wicked are destroyed, you will see it.
35Â I have seen a wicked and ruthless man
    flourishing like a luxuriant native tree,
36Â but he soon passed away and was no more;
    though I looked for him, he could not be found.
37Â Consider the blameless, observe the upright;
    a future awaits those who seek peace.[a]
38Â But all sinners will be destroyed;
    there will be no future[b] for the wicked.
39Â The salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord;
    he is their stronghold in time of trouble.
40Â The Lord helps them and delivers them;
    he delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
    because they take refuge in him.
Proverbs 10:6-7
6Â Blessings crown the head of the righteous,
    but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked.[a]
7Â The name of the righteous is used in blessings,[b]
    but the name of the wicked will rot.
