Exodus 17:8-19:15
The Amalekites Defeated
8Â The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. 9Â Moses said to Joshua, âChoose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.â
10Â So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. 11Â As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. 12Â When Mosesâ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands upâone on one side, one on the otherâso that his hands remained steady till sunset. 13Â So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.
14Â Then the Lord said to Moses, âWrite this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot outthe name of Amalek from under heaven.â
15Â Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. 16Â He said, âBecause hands were lifted up against[a] the throne of the Lord,[b] the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.â
Exodus 18
Jethro Visits Moses
18Â Now Jethro, the priest of Midian and father-in-law of Moses, heard of everything God had done for Moses and for his people Israel, and how the Lord had brought Israel out of Egypt.
2Â After Moses had sent away his wife Zipporah, his father-in-law Jethro received her 3Â and her two sons. One son was named Gershom,[c] for Moses said, âI have become a foreigner in a foreign landâ; 4Â and the other was named Eliezer,[d] for he said, âMy fatherâs God was my helper; he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh.â
5Â Jethro, Mosesâ father-in-law, together with Mosesâ sons and wife, came to him in the wilderness, where he was camped near the mountain of God. 6Â Jethro had sent word to him, âI, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you with your wife and her two sons.â
7Â So Moses went out to meet his father-in-law and bowed down and kissed him. They greeted each other and then went into the tent. 8Â Moses told his father-in-law about everything the Lord had done to Pharaoh and the Egyptians for Israelâs sake and about all the hardships they had met along the way and how the Lord had saved them.
9Â Jethro was delighted to hear about all the good things the Lord had done for Israel in rescuing them from the hand of the Egyptians. 10Â He said, âPraise be to the Lord, who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and of Pharaoh, and who rescued the people from the hand of the Egyptians. 11Â Now I know that the Lord is greater than all other gods, for he did this to those who had treated Israel arrogantly.â 12Â Then Jethro, Mosesâ father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and other sacrifices to God, and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat a meal with Mosesâ father-in-law in the presence of God.
13Â The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening. 14Â When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, âWhat is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?â
15Â Moses answered him, âBecause the people come to me to seek Godâs will. 16Â Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of Godâs decrees and instructions.â
17Â Mosesâ father-in-law replied, âWhat you are doing is not good. 18Â You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone. 19Â Listen now to me and I will give you some advice, and may God be with you. You must be the peopleâs representative before God and bring their disputes to him. 20Â Teach them his decrees and instructions, and show them the way they are to live and how they are to behave. 21Â But select capable men from all the peopleâmen who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gainâand appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 22Â Have them serve as judges for the people at all times, but have them bring every difficult case to you; the simple cases they can decide themselves. That will make your load lighter, because they will share it with you. 23Â If you do this and God so commands, you will be able to stand the strain, and all these people will go home satisfied.â
24Â Moses listened to his father-in-law and did everything he said. 25Â He chose capable men from all Israel and made them leaders of the people, officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens. 26Â They served as judges for the people at all times. The difficult cases they brought to Moses, but the simple ones they decided themselves.
27Â Then Moses sent his father-in-law on his way, and Jethro returned to his own country.
Exodus 19:1-15
At Mount Sinai
19Â On the first day of the third month after the Israelites left Egyptâon that very dayâthey came to the Desert of Sinai. 2Â After they set out from Rephidim,they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain.
3Â Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, âThis is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: 4Â âYou yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eaglesâ wings and brought you to myself. 5Â Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, 6Â you[e] will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.â These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.â
7Â So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all the words the Lord had commanded him to speak. 8Â The people all responded together, âWe will do everything the Lord has said.â So Moses brought their answer back to the Lord.
9Â The Lord said to Moses, âI am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear me speaking with you and will always put their trust in you.â Then Moses told the Lord what the people had said.
10Â And the Lord said to Moses, âGo to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow. Have them wash their clothes 11Â and be ready by the third day,because on that day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12Â Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, âBe careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death. 13Â They are to be stoned or shot with arrows; not a hand is to be laid on them. No person or animal shall be permitted to live.â Only when the ramâs horn sounds a long blast may they approach the mountain.â
14Â After Moses had gone down the mountain to the people, he consecrated them, and they washed their clothes. 15Â Then he said to the people, âPrepare yourselves for the third day. Abstain from sexual relations.â
Matthew 22:34-23:12
The Greatest Commandment
34Â Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35Â One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36Â âTeacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?â
37Â Jesus replied: ââLove the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.â[a] 38Â This is the first and greatest commandment.39Â And the second is like it: âLove your neighbor as yourself.â[b] 40Â All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.â
Whose Son Is the Messiah?
41Â While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42Â âWhat do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?â
âThe son of David,â they replied.
43Â He said to them, âHow is it then that David, speaking by the Spirit, calls him âLordâ? For he says,
44Â ââThe Lord said to my Lord:
    âSit at my right hand
until I put your enemies
    under your feet.ââ[c]
45Â If then David calls him âLord,â how can he be his son?â 46Â No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions.
A Warning Against Hypocrisy
23Â Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2Â âThe teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Mosesâ seat. 3Â So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4Â They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other peopleâs shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.
5Â âEverything they do is done for people to see: They make their phylacteries[d] wide and the tassels on their garments long; 6Â they love the place of honor at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; 7Â they love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and to be called âRabbiâ by others.
8Â âBut you are not to be called âRabbi,â for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. 9Â And do not call anyone on earth âfather,â for you have one Father,and he is in heaven. 10Â Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11Â The greatest among you will be your servant. 12Â For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
Psalm 27:7-14
7Â Hear my voice when I call, Lord;
    be merciful to me and answer me.
8Â My heart says of you, âSeek his face!â
    Your face, Lord, I will seek.
9Â Do not hide your face from me,
    do not turn your servant away in anger;
    you have been my helper.
Do not reject me or forsake me,
    God my Savior.
10Â Though my father and mother forsake me,
    the Lord will receive me.
11Â Teach me your way, Lord;
    lead me in a straight path
    because of my oppressors.
12Â Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes,
    for false witnesses rise up against me,
    spouting malicious accusations.
13Â I remain confident of this:
    I will see the goodness of the Lord
    in the land of the living.
14Â Wait for the Lord;
    be strong and take heart
    and wait for the Lord.
Proverbs 6:27-35
27Â Can a man scoop fire into his lap
    without his clothes being burned?
28Â Can a man walk on hot coals
    without his feet being scorched?
29Â So is he who sleeps with another manâs wife;
    no one who touches her will go unpunished.
30Â People do not despise a thief if he steals
    to satisfy his hunger when he is starving.
31Â Yet if he is caught, he must pay sevenfold,
    though it costs him all the wealth of his house.
32Â But a man who commits adultery has no sense;
    whoever does so destroys himself.
33Â Blows and disgrace are his lot,
    and his shame will never be wiped away.
34Â For jealousy arouses a husbandâs fury,
    and he will show no mercy when he takes revenge.
35Â He will not accept any compensation;
    he will refuse a bribe, however great it is.
