Exodus 34:1-35:9
The New Stone Tablets
34ย The Lord said to Moses, โChisel out two stone tablets like the first ones, and I will write on them the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. 2ย Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai. Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain. 3ย No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain; not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain.โ
4ย So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the Lord had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands. 5ย Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord.6ย And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, โThe Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7ย maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation.โ
8ย Moses bowed to the ground at once and worshiped. 9ย โLord,โ he said, โif I have found favor in your eyes, then let the Lord go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive our wickedness and our sin, and take us as your inheritance.โ
10ย Then the Lord said: โI am making a covenant with you. Before all your people I will do wonders never before done in any nation in all the world. The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the Lord, will do for you. 11ย Obey what I command you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 12ย Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare among you. 13ย Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles.[a] 14ย Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
15ย โBe careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices. 16ย And when you choose some of their daughters as wives for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods, they will lead your sons to do the same.
17ย โDo not make any idols.
18ย โCelebrate the Festival of Unleavened Bread. For seven days eat bread made without yeast, as I commanded you. Do this at the appointed time in the month of Aviv, for in that month you came out of Egypt.
19ย โThe first offspring of every womb belongs to me, including all the firstborn males of your livestock, whether from herd or flock. 20ย Redeem the firstborn donkey with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem all your firstborn sons.
โNo one is to appear before me empty-handed.
21ย โSix days you shall labor, but on the seventh day you shall rest; even during the plowing season and harvest you must rest.
22ย โCelebrate the Festival of Weeks with the firstfruits of the wheat harvest, and the Festival of Ingathering at the turn of the year.[b] 23ย Three times a year all your men are to appear before the Sovereign Lord, the God of Israel. 24ย I will drive out nations before you and enlarge your territory, and no one will covet your land when you go up three times each year to appear before the Lord your God.
25ย โDo not offer the blood of a sacrifice to me along with anything containing yeast, and do not let any of the sacrifice from the Passover Festival remain until morning.
26ย โBring the best of the firstfruits of your soil to the house of the Lord your God.
โDo not cook a young goat in its motherโs milk.โ
27ย Then the Lord said to Moses, โWrite down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.โ28ย Moses was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights without eating bread or drinking water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenantโthe Ten Commandments.
The Radiant Face of Moses
29ย When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands, he was not aware that his face was radiantbecause he had spoken with the Lord. 30ย When Aaron and all the Israelites saw Moses, his face was radiant, and they were afraid to come near him.31ย But Moses called to them; so Aaron and all the leaders of the community came back to him, and he spoke to them. 32ย Afterward all the Israelites came near him, and he gave them all the commands the Lord had given him on Mount Sinai.
33ย When Moses finished speaking to them, he put a veil over his face. 34ย But whenever he entered the Lordโs presence to speak with him, he removed the veil until he came out. And when he came out and told the Israelites what he had been commanded, 35ย they saw that his face was radiant. Then Moses would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with the Lord.
Exodus 35:1-9
Sabbath Regulations
35ย Moses assembled the whole Israelite community and said to them, โThese are the things the Lord has commanded you to do: 2ย For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a day of sabbath rest to the Lord. Whoever does any work on it is to be put to death.3ย Do not light a fire in any of your dwellings on the Sabbath day.โ
Materials for the Tabernacle
4ย Moses said to the whole Israelite community, โThis is what the Lord has commanded: 5ย From what you have, take an offering for the Lord. Everyone who is willing is to bring to the Lord an offering of gold, silver and bronze; 6ย blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen; goat hair; 7ย ram skins dyed red and another type of durable leather[c]; acacia wood; 8ย olive oil for the light; spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense;9ย and onyx stones and other gems to be mounted on the ephod and breastpiece.
Matthew 27:15-31
15ย Now it was the governorโs custom at the festival to release a prisoner chosen by the crowd. 16ย At that time they had a well-known prisoner whose name was Jesus[a] Barabbas. 17ย So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate asked them, โWhich one do you want me to release to you: Jesus Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?โ 18ย For he knew it was out of self-interest that they had handed Jesus over to him.
19ย While Pilate was sitting on the judgeโs seat, his wife sent him this message: โDonโt have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.โ
20ย But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
21ย โWhich of the two do you want me to release to you?โ asked the governor.
โBarabbas,โ they answered.
22ย โWhat shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called the Messiah?โ Pilate asked.
They all answered, โCrucify him!โ
23ย โWhy? What crime has he committed?โ asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, โCrucify him!โ
24ย When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that instead an uproar was starting, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. โI am innocent of this manโs blood,โ he said. โIt is your responsibility!โ
25ย All the people answered, โHis blood is on us and on our children!โ
26ย Then he released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.
The Soldiers Mock Jesus
27ย Then the governorโs soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole company of soldiers around him. 28ย They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, 29ย and then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on his head. They put a staff in his right hand. Then they knelt in front of him and mocked him. โHail, king of the Jews!โ they said. 30ย They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.31ย After they had mocked him, they took off the robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him away to crucify him.
Psalm 33:12-22
12ย Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
ย ย ย ย the people he chose for his inheritance.
13ย From heaven the Lord looks down
ย ย ย ย and sees all mankind;
14ย from his dwelling place he watches
ย ย ย ย all who live on earthโ
15ย he who forms the hearts of all,
ย ย ย ย who considers everything they do.
16ย No king is saved by the size of his army;
ย ย ย ย no warrior escapes by his great strength.
17ย A horse is a vain hope for deliverance;
ย ย ย ย despite all its great strength it cannot save.
18ย But the eyes of the Lord are on those who fear him,
ย ย ย ย on those whose hope is in his unfailing love,
19ย to deliver them from death
ย ย ย ย and keep them alive in famine.
20ย We wait in hope for the Lord;
ย ย ย ย he is our help and our shield.
21ย In him our hearts rejoice,
ย ย ย ย for we trust in his holy name.
22ย May your unfailing love be with us, Lord,
ย ย ย ย even as we put our hope in you.
Proverbs 9:1-6
Invitations of Wisdom and Folly
9ย Wisdom has built her house;
ย ย ย ย she has set up[a] its seven pillars.
2ย She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine;
ย ย ย ย she has also set her table.
3ย She has sent out her servants, and she calls
ย ย ย ย from the highest point of the city,
4ย ย ย ย ย โLet all who are simple come to my house!โ
To those who have no sense she says,
5ย ย ย ย ย โCome, eat my food
ย ย ย ย and drink the wine I have mixed.
6ย Leave your simple ways and you will live;
ย ย ย ย walk in the way of insight.โ
