Psalm 138 (NIV)
Of David.
1 I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart;
before the “gods” I will sing your praise.
2 I will bow down toward your holy temple
and will praise your name
for your unfailing love and your faithfulness,
for you have so exalted your solemn decree
that it surpasses your fame.
3 When I called, you answered me;
you greatly emboldened me.4 May all the kings of the earth praise you, Lord,
when they hear what you have decreed.
5 May they sing of the ways of the Lord,
for the glory of the Lord is great.6 Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly;
though lofty, he sees them from afar.
7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you preserve my life.
You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes;
with your right hand you save me.
8 The Lord will vindicate me;
your love, Lord, endures forever—
do not abandon the works of your hands.
What a beautiful psalm this is. Psalm 138 is a psalm of David that expresses profound gratitude and praise to God for His steadfast love, faithfulness, and mighty deeds. Psalm 138 reminds us to praise with all our hearts, knowing that God's love and faithfulness endure forever. We can walk in peace and confidence, knowing we are always in His care.

Exploring the Key Themes and Messages of Psalm 138
Follow me, we are going to delve into the key themes and messages we can learn from King David in Psalm 138:
First of all, we learn to Praise and Worship God: The psalm begins with David declaring his intention to praise God with his whole heart. He expresses his commitment to worship God publicly, even in the presence of other gods, idols, or false gods.
Next, we learn to Acknowledge God's Faithfulness and Love: David acknowledges God's unfailing love and faithfulness, highlighting that God’s promises and His word are exalted and trustworthy.
Next, we also learn to give Personal Testimony of God's Answered Prayers: David shares his personal experience of calling out to God in times of need and being answered. This experience has emboldened him and strengthened his faith.
Following this, we learn about Universal Praise: The psalmist expresses a desire for all the kings of the earth to recognize and praise God when they hear of His wonderful deeds. This signifies the universal nature of God’s greatness.
We also learn of God's Care for the Humble: Although God is exalted, He cares for the lowly and humble. David contrasts God’s attentiveness to the humble with His distance from the proud.
Additionally, we learn about God's Protection and Deliverance: David speaks of walking in the midst of trouble but being preserved and saved by God’s mighty hand. This illustrates God’s protective and saving power in the face of adversity.
Lastly, we gain Confidence in God’s Purpose: The psalm concludes with David’s confidence that God will fulfill His purposes for him. He trusts in God's enduring love and prays that God will not abandon the work of His hands, referring to both himself and the people of Israel.
Psalm 138 is a heartfelt expression of David's gratitude and praise to God for His steadfast love and faithfulness. It combines personal testimony with universal themes of God's greatness and care. David's confidence in God’s continued guidance and protection shines through, making this psalm a powerful reminder of the importance of trust and worship in our relationship with God.

Bible Stories Reflecting the Themes of Psalm 138
Let's explore several Bible stories that reflect the same themes of gratitude, praise, faithfulness, answered prayers, and divine protection as found in Psalm 138.
First Story: Hannah’s Prayer According to 1 Samuel 1:9-20; 2:1-10
In the hill country of Ephraim, there lived a woman named Hannah. She was married to Elkanah, but her heart was heavy because she was unable to bear children. Year after year, they would go up to the house of the Lord at Shiloh, where Hannah would pour out her soul in prayer. One year, in her deep anguish, she made a vow to the Lord: if He would give her a son, she would dedicate him to His service all the days of his life.
God heard Hannah's plea. She conceived and bore a son, whom she named Samuel, meaning "heard by God." True to her vow, when Samuel was weaned, Hannah brought him to the house of the Lord at Shiloh, presenting him to Eli the priest. Overflowing with gratitude, Hannah lifted a prayer of praise, echoing the sentiments of
Psalm 138:3
“When I called, you answered me; you greatly emboldened me.”
The Second Story is King Jehoshaphat’s Victory Found in 2 Chronicles 20:1-30
During the reign of King Jehoshaphat of Judah, a formidable coalition of enemy armies gathered against the land. Jehoshaphat was alarmed, but instead of relying on his own strength, he turned to seek the Lord. Gathering the people together, he proclaimed a fast and led them in prayer and worship before God.
In response to their cries, God assured them of victory. Jehoshaphat, demonstrating unwavering faith, appointed singers to lead the army into battle, praising God for His holiness and His promises of deliverance. As they marched forth singing, the Lord set ambushes against their enemies. Confusion struck the coalition, and they turned on each other, resulting in a miraculous victory.
Reflecting on this deliverance, Psalm 138:7 resonates deeply:
“Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life. You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes; with your right hand you save me.”
The Next Story is About Daniel’s Prayer and Deliverance as Found in Daniel 6:1-23.
In the land of Babylon, Daniel distinguished himself among the administrators and satraps because of his exceptional qualities. His unwavering devotion to God, however, stirred jealousy among his colleagues. They devised a plan to trap Daniel by persuading King Darius to issue a decree that for thirty days, no one could pray to any god or man except the king.
But Daniel continued to pray to his God three times a day, as was his custom. When caught in the act, he was thrown into the den of lions. Yet, God miraculously shut the mouths of the lions, sparing Daniel's life. Witnessing this divine intervention, King Darius acknowledged the power and faithfulness of Daniel's God.
This story echoes the truth of
Psalm 138:6
“Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly; though lofty, he sees them from afar.”
We Have Another Beautiful Story about Jesus' Mother, Mary's Song of Praise found in Luke 1:46-55.
In the town of Nazareth, the angel Gabriel appeared to a young virgin named Mary, announcing that she would conceive and bear a son who would be called the Son of the Most High. Overwhelmed with awe and gratitude, Mary visited her relative Elizabeth, who confirmed the angel's words.
In response, Mary burst into a song of praise known as the Magnificat. She glorified God for choosing her, a humble servant, to bear the Savior of the world. Her song echoed the sentiments of Psalm 138:1, “I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; before the 'gods' I will sing your praise.”
The Healing of Hezekiah as Recounted in Isaiah 38:1-20
In the city of Jerusalem, King Hezekiah fell gravely ill. Isaiah the prophet came to him with a message from the Lord: set your house in order, for you shall die; you will not recover from this illness. Distraught, Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed earnestly to God, recalling his faithfulness and the work he had done.
Moved by Hezekiah's prayer, God heard and answered him. Isaiah returned with a new message: God had seen Hezekiah's tears and would add fifteen years to his life. Overcome with gratitude, Hezekiah composed a song of thanksgiving, expressing his trust in God's promise and mercy.
This account reflects the essence of
Psalm 138:8
”The Lord will vindicate me; your love, Lord, endures forever—do not abandon the works of your hands.”
Paul and Silas in Prison as Narrated in Acts 16:16-40
In the city of Philippi, Paul and Silas were unjustly accused, severely flogged, and thrown into the inner prison. Despite their wounds and chains, at midnight, they prayed and sang hymns to God. Their praise echoed through the darkness of their confinement.
Suddenly, a violent earthquake shook the foundations of the prison, opening all the doors and loosening everyone's chains. The jailer, awestruck by this display of divine power, fell trembling before Paul and Silas, asking how he could be saved. In response to their witness and testimony, the jailer and his household believed in Jesus and were baptized.
Their experience resonates with
Psalm 138:4-5
“May all the kings of the earth praise you, Lord, when they hear what you have decreed. May they sing of the ways of the Lord, for the glory of the Lord is great.”
These stories from Scripture vividly illustrate the themes found in Psalm 138: the power of heartfelt gratitude, unwavering praise, God's faithfulness to His promises, the transformative impact of answered prayers, the universal call to worship God, and the assurance of His protection and deliverance. They remind us that, like David, we can trust in God’s steadfast love and faithfulness in every circumstance.
