Shaking on the Horizon: Cascadia, the Ring of Fire, and the Watchman’s Call
For years, Pastor Paul Begley and prophetic voices have spoken of looming West Coast “shakings” — visions of earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and even massive waves rising from the Pacific. Today, we bring you the scientific reports that echo those warnings, examining the Cascadia Subduction Zone, the wider Ring of Fire, and rare but possible threats like a Pacific meteor impact.
The Science: Cascadia’s Real—and Measurable—Risk
The Cascadia Subduction Zone is a massive, 600-mile-long fault lying just offshore from Northern California to Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Here, the Juan de Fuca Plate is slowly sliding beneath the North American Plate—a geological process that is both silent and relentless. Over the past 6,000 years, this fault has produced at least 13 megathrust earthquakes, each capable of devastating coastal regions. The intervals between these quakes are irregular, ranging from 200 to 800 years. The last event—the legendary “Big One”—struck on January 26, 1700, with an estimated magnitude of 8.7 to 9.2. It unleashed a powerful tsunami that crossed the Pacific and was recorded in Japan as an unexplained “orphan wave.”
Today, U.S. Geological Survey and Natural Resources Canada scientists agree that Cascadia’s potential for another megathrust event is not a question of “if” but “when.” What makes Cascadia unique—and ominous—is its unusual seismic quiet. Unlike other major subduction zones, Cascadia rarely produces moderate or frequent quakes. This long silence could mean the locked plates are storing immense strain, poised for a sudden release.
Alongside earthquake risk, volcanic monitoring is ongoing across the Cascades, from Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens in Washington, to Mount Shasta in California, and volcanic belts in British Columbia. At present, all monitored volcanoes are at Normal/Green alert levels, meaning no eruption is imminent. Even so, sensitive instruments detect background seismicity—small tremors and subterranean movements that hint at the dynamic nature of the region’s geology.
Another piece of the puzzle is “slow slip events”—silent, weeks-long shifts along the plate interface that occur deep beneath the surface. While invisible to the public, these movements can either increase stress on the megathrust faultor, in some cases, temporarily relieve it. Thanks to new 2025 geophysical research, scientists now have near real-time monitoring of these slow slip events, offering unprecedented insight into Cascadia’s hidden activity.
The threat doesn’t end with shaking. In a full-scale megathrust event, land subsidence—the sinking of coastal ground by as much as one or two meters—would permanently change the shoreline. According to USGS studies, when combined with ongoing sea-level rise, this subsidence could triple the risk of coastal flooding in parts of Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia by the year 2100. Such a scenario underscores the urgent need for both practical preparedness and spiritual readiness—because history, science, and prophecy all point toward an inevitable shaking.

The Wider Ring of Fire—and Fuji’s Watch
The Pacific Ring of Fire is a vast horseshoe-shaped zone encircling the Pacific Ocean, stretching for roughly 25,000 miles. It is home to about 75% of the world’s active and dormant volcanoes and produces nearly 90% of the world’s earthquakes. From the towering stratovolcanoes of the Andes in South America, to the volcanic arcs of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, to the deep trenches and explosive peaks of Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific, this ring is Earth’s most seismically and volcanically active region.
Cascadia, on North America’s northwest coast, is one critical segment of this immense arc. But far across the Pacific, another famous giant lies in wait: Mount Fuji in Japan. Rising 12,388 feet (3,776 meters), Fuji is an iconic symbol of Japan—and a volcano with a violent history. Its last eruption occurred in 1707–1708, known as the Hōei eruption, which followed a massive earthquake and blanketed Edo (modern-day Tokyo) in ash. Scientists note that Fuji has been dormant for over 300 years, a long repose for an active stratovolcano.
In spring 2025, Japanese authorities updated ashfall hazard and response plans for a possible Fuji eruption. These updates are not forecasts of imminent activity, but rather preparedness measures designed to ensure communities, infrastructure, and emergency services can respond effectively should Fuji awaken. The plans outline evacuation procedures, ash-removal strategies for roads and airports, communication systems for the public, and coordination between local and national agencies.
Japan’s readiness posture reflects broader awareness around the Pacific Rim that large-scale eruptions—while unpredictable—are inevitable over geologic timescales. Recent studies also highlight that ash from a Fuji-scale eruption could disrupt transportation, power grids, and agriculture across the Kanto region, affecting millions.
In prophetic terms, watchers often view the Ring of Fire’s stirrings—whether in Cascadia, Japan, or elsewhere—as both natural cycles and possible signs in the earth. Scientific vigilance, such as Japan’s Fuji readiness plan, parallels the biblical call to “watch and be ready” (Matthew 24:42), reminding us that physical preparedness and spiritual alertness go hand in hand.

Could a Meteor Strike the Pacific?
While earthquakes and volcanoes dominate most Pacific disaster scenarios, there’s another potential—though far less likely—trigger for catastrophic waves and seismic disruption: a meteor impact.
In 2025, NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office (PDCO), working alongside international partners such as the European Space Agency (ESA) and China’s Near-Earth Object Survey Telescope (CNEOST), identified and began tracking asteroid 2024 YR4. This space rock briefly reached Level 3 on the Torino Impact Hazard Scale earlier this year—a rare designation indicating a “close encounter” with a small chance of collision capable of localized destruction.
According to NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), the latest orbital projections show a small but nonzero impact probability for December 22, 2032. Importantly, updated trajectory modeling suggests that 2024 YR4 is unlikely to strike Earth, and it poses no extinction-level threat. Scientists stress that the risk is being refined as new observations come in, and the asteroid will remain under continuous monitoring until its path is fully confirmed.
If a medium-sized asteroid—tens to hundreds of meters in diameter—were to impact the Pacific Ocean, the effects could be severe on a regional scale. The immense kinetic energy would displace massive volumes of water, potentially creating tsunami waves that could inundate coastal regions thousands of miles away. Depending on size and location, such an impact might also trigger submarine landslides and possibly increase stress on tectonic boundaries, including segments of the Ring of Fire.
For perspective, scientists often cite the 1908 Tunguska event in Siberia (caused by an object 50–60 meters across) or the 2013 Chelyabinsk meteor (about 20 meters across) as reminders that even smaller space rocks can release energy equivalent to multiple nuclear bombs. An ocean strike by something larger could be far more destructive, though still orders of magnitude smaller than the asteroid that ended the age of the dinosaurs.
In prophetic terms, some Bible interpreters connect such scenarios to passages in Revelation 8:8–9, which describe “something like a great mountain, burning with fire” being thrown into the sea, resulting in catastrophic loss of life and maritime destruction. While scientists assess the current Pacific impact risk as low, the very fact that agencies maintain 24/7 planetary monitoring systems mirrors the watchman’s role—anticipating threats and issuing warnings before disaster strikes.
Prophetic Alignment, Watchman’s Call, and Faith in Action
The prophetic warnings we introduced earlier—visions of powerful earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and massive waves rising from the Pacific—are neither isolated nor recent. For years, multiple watchmen have confirmed this message, pointing to a season when natural upheaval may coincide with profound spiritual shaking—a moment when hearts are tested, and the harvest is ripe.
From the late prophet Kim Clement’s references to “the earth shaking on the West,” to John Paul Jackson’s detailed visions of coastal disruptions, to more recent watchmen describing heightened activity along the Ring of Fire, the prophetic pattern has been remarkably consistent. These warnings are not given to stir fear, but to awaken God’s people to prayer, repentance, and readiness.
Scripture gives us this blueprint. Ezekiel 33 calls the watchman to stand on the wall, to see what is coming, and to sound the alarm—not to set dates or sensationalize events, but to warn in season so God’s people will not be caught unaware. In Matthew 24:42, Jesus exhorts: “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.” The posture is one of continual vigilance—rooted in peace, not panic.
In the natural realm, earthquake monitoring systems, tsunami alert networks, and volcanic observatories act as modern-day watchtowers, issuing warnings when instruments detect danger. In the same way, prophetic watchmen are called to discern spiritual tremors—shifts in nations, moral climates, and the Church—and to lead God’s people in both intercession and preparation.

Faith + Action: Practical Steps for Preparedness
Just as Noah prepared an ark at God’s instruction, we, too, can couple faith with readiness:
Know your hazards & routes: Review your local earthquake and tsunami maps, evacuation routes, and safe zones. (The NOAA Center for Tsunami Research and university seismic departments offer excellent planning resources.)
Stock supplies & maintain communications: Keep 2–3 weeks’ worth of water, food, medications, copies of important IDs, battery/solar chargers, and a family contact plan.
Equip your church: Train greeters and ushers for calm evacuation, assign prayer and care teams, and store extra relief supplies for your congregation and community.
Pray Scripture daily: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Psalm 46). Pray for repentance, protection, and boldness to serve neighbors during times of crisis.
As we keep watch over the Cascadia Subduction Zone, Mt. Fuji, and the wider Ring of Fire, we do so with one eye on the scientific data and the other on the promises of Scripture. God is not surprised by these events. Instead, He calls His people to shine as lights in darkened times, pointing to the only unshakable foundation—Jesus Christ (Hebrews 12:26–29).
Join us for A Prayer
Heavenly Father,
We lift up the West Coast, the nations along the Ring of Fire, and every community in harm’s way. You are our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). We ask for Your mercy, protection, and guidance in the days ahead. Prepare Your Church to be a light in the darkness and a beacon of hope to the fearful. Give wisdom to leaders, scientists, and watchmen—both spiritual and natural—that they may sound the alarm in due season. Help us to be watchful, prayerful, and faithful to Your calling. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Salvation Prayer
If you have never made Jesus Christ the Lord of your life, now is the time. Scripture says, “Now is the day of salvation”(2 Corinthians 6:2).
Lord Jesus,
I believe You are the Son of God. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead on the third day. I repent of my sins and turn to You. Come into my heart and be my Lord and Savior. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and lead me in Your truth. From this day forward, I choose to follow You. Thank You for saving me and giving me eternal life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
If you prayed this prayer, welcome to the family of God. Find a Bible-believing church, read His Word daily, and walk in the new life He has given you.
