California Governor Gavin Newsom erupted at a press conference earlier this week, slamming recent ICE deportation operations across the state as “cruel,” “reckless,” and “unjust.” The spark? A federal operation targeting violent criminal offenders who entered the country illegally — many of whom had evaded justice for years under the state's sanctuary city protections.
Newsom, flanked by his coastal elite allies, went so far as to suggest California might withhold federal tax payments. “We pay the bills,” he declared, in a bizarre declaration that echoed 19th-century nullification rhetoric — prompting some observers to compare him to Confederate leaders.
Yet the numbers tell a chilling tale: 10,000 illegal crossings a day over four years. Up to 12 million undocumented migrants entered the U.S. during that time — many into California. Meanwhile, ICE is capable of deporting only 800 to 2,000 per day. That’s not even enough to match one day’s entry.
And yet, Newsom’s ire is not directed at the cartels, or the traffickers, or even the failed policies of the Biden administration. It’s aimed squarely at Trump — and anyone who dares to enforce the law.
